Dell 23.8inch Flat Panel

A flat panel that has speakers is the norm these days, they are normally tiny and do not have much volume, here something different as the speakers fit into the stand of the panel, so they can be larger and also give a far better sound.

The Dell S2418H full HD monitor measures 54x30.5x1.5cm; its stand will raise it from your desk by 10cm. The stand is a frame in the shape of a landscaped ‘D’ and the supplied speaker fits in it .5cm at the front (flat edge) and 3cm at the rear, it has two buttons + and – to control the volume. There is a short grey lead that emerges from the rear of the speaker which connects to the panel; the audio signal is transferred via the HDMI connection from the panel to the speaker. You can of course also use an audio lead from the PC to the panel for those using D-Sub (VGA).

The rear of the panel has audio connectors, D-Sub and HDMI on one side of the connecting arm and DC input as well as the audio output (mini Din) on the other side of the connection arm.

Like most panels I found the auto setting was better than anything I could achieve for normal use. It also senses if you are connecting HDMI (as provided) or D-Sub from the PC. Like the majority of desktop panels the display is 1920x1080.

The viewable screen is 52x30cm which gives the notional diagonal imperial measurement of 23.8inch. It has close to no borders as you are likely to get, .5cm top and sides and less than 1cm at the bottom.

There are five buttons towards the right side of the bottom of the screen, the on screen controls of the panel are for brightness, contrast and a range of pre-configured settings for specific uses.

While this gives a clear sharp image that is kind to your eyes it also gives far better sound than normally associated with that from a flat panel, both in volume and quality of sound. This is simply because of the size of the speakers at six watts and perhaps also its position as it is projecting the sound upwards.

According to their website Dell are the number one brand for their panels worldwide and certainly this seemed to me to be well made and it is easy to link the stand to the panel and no tools are required.

It comes with a three year next day exchange warranty and to offer that you must be confident in the build quality.

Everything I have said is positive – you are now waiting for the but – however there is not one that affects the panel or the great idea to take the speakers out of the panel and everything about it. This all makes it a quality product and there is the one minus the cost £218 for a 24inch panel is quite a lot.
