A SMART Toothbrush

Similar, but not identical in its outward appearance to the Colgate 250R electric toothbrush reviewed recently, the company's E1 product is a Smart Electronic Toothbrush.  White in colour, the E1 toothbrush consists of a handle unit and replaceable brush head.  The toothbrush handle does have a couple of differences that help distinguish it from the 250R model.  Rather than an elongated red on/off control switch, the E1's offering has a small circular on/off button that blends into the handle.  A second difference is that the company logo changes from red letters to white letters with a red background.

Included in the box with the toothbrush are a spare brush head, charging base with attached lead and a two-pin plug plus an Instruction Sheet.  Indicated by the "Smart" portion of its title, this toothbrush can not only provide vibrating technology for a healthy cleansing of the mouth but it can also pair with a downloadable Colgate Connect app.  This app can be used to track and reward your brushing behaviour to provide real-time feedback in order to advise the user on their brushing technique and the routine they follow.

While the product's packaging only indicates an Apple version of the app, there is an Android version that can be downloaded if that suits the user better.  When the app is first run, a connection, via Bluetooth, will need to be made between a smartphone and the toothbrush with permission granted for location plus an account will need to be created as the user follows a series of screen prompts.  The account set-up will require information regarding the user's first name, email address and date-of-birth so that a birthday greetings can be delivered on the appropriate date.

As you may, no doubt, have noticed, I have made no mention of a password being required for the Colgate Connect account.  This is because a password is not required.  While this might seem a little surprising, I can not imagine anybody wanting to take control of the mouth health of somebody else.

Firing up the Colgate Connect app allows you to switch between sections entitled Home, Activities, Rewards and Calendar.  The Home screen will display an up-to-date reading of the use of the connected toothbrush.  This data will be broken down to show the Duration in minutes, Frequency per day and the Surface coverage.  Activities consists of a coaching session on how best to use the toothbrush with help from animated diagrams.  The Rewards section deals with Smile points awarded for the completion of coaching sessions, various tests and a couple of games.  The Smile points can be redeemed for access to special features.  A monthly calendar and current date make up the Calendar section.

When switched on the Colgate E1 toothbrush will vibrate as the head brush moves up, down and from side to side at a fast rate as its combination of soft and denser bristles clean the different areas of the mouth.  Cleaning will be completed in two minutes, broken up into 30 seconds segments, as various areas are targeted.  The unit's internal Lithium ion battery should give around 10 days of usage based on two brush cleaning sessions a day.  Prior to its first time use, Colgate recommends that the E1 is charged for a period of 12 hours to gain the full benefits from the product.

The Colgate E1 comes with two brush head units, one already attached to the handle unit, with replacement brush heads being available.  Overall I feel the various additional features built into this toothbrush would be of more benefit to the young members of the family.  Currently the Colgate E1 toothbrush is an exclusive product to Apple.  It is priced at £89.95.
