Nero Platinum Suite

Nero used to be the best and quickest way to create a CD or DVD; now with so few PC’s even coming with an optical drive they have widened the net to include other things. I counted eighteen items in the grouping all accessible under the Nero Start icon. For some reason they include one other that needs to be downloaded separately to make it nineteen.

The initial download was quite quick but once you enter your serial number you find there is more work to do. I let it install everything and this took around 15 minutes.

Not everything went to plan and neither my PC or Notebook would let me install as one item the main Nero component goes to the 335MB download which shows as 50% then restarts in a continuous process. Both these units have had Nero on in the past but I always remove any earlier version and restart.

However the recently reviewed Acer Aspire 1 was fine and apart from adding some Microsoft files everything worked.

This of course had no optical drive so you would normally only have the ability to compile a CD or DVD and then copy the resulting data to another PC that has a CD/DVD.

I saw an advert for a very reasonably priced USB CD/DVD drive so I purchased it - review to follow next week - so I was able to burn CD’s without problem.

So the nineteen programs are, Nero BackItUp, a backup package which is something we all should do regularly. Nero Burning Rom which has lots of options that allows numerous options for the type of CD or DVD to create. Nero Cover Designer that allows you to create great artwork easily. Nero Disc to Device that with just three clicks allows you to copy your videos to your mobile your favourite Cloud service or PC. Nero Duplicate Manager that allows you to save space by deleting duplicates. Nero Express a cut down version of Burning Rom which is what I normally use for jobs that I know what I need. Nero Face Beautiful which can transform your photos. Nero Media Home which can identify people from your files and once it knows them can find any further images of that person.

Nero Photo Snap that lets you manipulate your images with up to twenty different effects.

Nero Recode which allows you to change the type of output from what you input, my favourite is very quickly changing WAV to MP3 great for sending over the Internet this reduces greatly the file size.

Nero Rescue Agent allows you to salvage files when your media misbehaves.

Nero Score if you want to know how fast your PC is or isn’t.

Nero Sound Trax allows you to change and manipulate.

Nero Tune It Up allows you to salvage space.

Nero USBxCopy has features that include features to work with Raspberry Pi and transfer ISO to USB.

Nero Video allows you to recode videos.

Nero Wave Editor lets you work with .WAV files.

1001 TV lets you watch TV that you cannot normally see using mobile technology.

Finally the one item you need to install separately Audials Music Recorder.

Everything apart from Nero Score sit happily behind the Nero Start icon on your desktop.

It's available direct from Nero in Germany for £39.95.

Please however remember the problems I had which currently remain unresolved.
