Honor 9X Pro

Knowing the price of something when I start reviewing is not my choice as it might predetermine the value score, here however I do know the price and ‘I do not believe it’ came immediately to mind. As always there must be minus points, now to try and find them.

Really top end offerings by Samsung and Apple can get towards four figures, while Honor is a part of Huawei their prices are normally somewhat lower but this offering is really low, the initial promotion price was sub £200. Sadly this offer finished just as I received the unit to review, the price now is £249.99 but you do get one of a choice of three free gifts with it.

It is 16x7.3x.8cm and weighs 210grams. The viewable screen is 15x7cm which gives the notional diagonal imperial display screen of a tad under 6.6inches. The screen resolution is 1080x2340; the display is sharp and clear.

The processor is a Kirin 810 7nm Octa-core chipset. You get 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage and you can add a Micro SD Card or OTG device if you need more. The battery is 4000mAh.

Going around the outside starting on the right with the volume rocker and below this the on/off button and fingerprint reader. Bootup is 16 seconds, shutdown only 2 seconds. The base has a rather good speaker with plenty of volume, 3.5mm socket for headphones, microphone, and USB ‘C’ socket for charging and support for an OTG device. The left side is totally clear. The top has microphone, selfie camera, SIM and Micro SD card entry point. Onto the back that has three cameras and flash in a vertical line .5cm in and .5cm down from the top right. The 48MP rear camera does protrude very slightly around 1mm from the back but you are unlike to get many better images from SmartPhones costing twice as much, the night shots are brilliant as is the zoom.

The front selfie camera (16MP) pops up from the top and therefore is not interfering with the screen display.

The Home Screen displays four lines of four Apps with the standard three buttons below – you can swap to gestures if you wish – at the top of the screen are the normal things ISP, Wi-Fi, Clock etc. Below this and before the four lines of four Apps are a larger time display with day and date below and the current Weather icon beside. Flip right on the screen to see the rest of your Apps.

So far all good news now for something that may be a problem no built in Google which means no Google Store so check the Apps you want/need are in the Huawei App Gallery. There is a perfectly adequate Gmail alternative which sends and receives without problem. The Internet search seems perfectly adequate as is the Browser.

The App store has a couple of mapping packages one looks to me even better than the Google offering but you do need to download it.

A couple of the Apps I downloaded stated they needed ‘Google Play’ to work as far as my tests went they did not as they performed correctly.

So unless you need an App not available in the Huawei App Gallery I can see no reason not to add this to a very short list for your next phone, the price is very keen, the screen display is excellent as is the camera and 4000mAh battery are pluses.

The Honor 9X Pro is available from the link below for £249.99 with choice of three free gifts.
