The Red Trace

With magic, marriage and mayhem, this next episode from the Living Legend series will set you a challenge.

A new release from Friendly Fox is Living Legends - The Red Trace.  This is a Hidden Object Adventure game which is available in Collector's Edition format adding a number of bonus items to enhance the game playing experience.  The game casts you in the role of Roland who is on his way to marry Ruby when strange events begin to occur.

Leading the way in this respect, Red Ivy begins to spread over the outside of the wedding chapel.  Before the actual ceremony can be carried out, a huge wolf invades the chapel and carries off the prospective bride as well as causing plenty of damage to the building's inside plus turning Paul, the bride's father into a boar.  You must make use of whatever you can find to help you rescue your beloved Ruby and discover what is going on with people being turned into animals and attacking any humans in the vicinity.

Assisting you in this task will be a cursor that changes shape to indicate when it is near to possible active area requiring further attention.  Arranged across the bottom of the screen will be the usual tools featuring a Map, Notes and Tasks information, an Inventory with those items requiring some additional tasks being indicated by a plus sign, Strategy Guide and Hint feature.  To this area will be added a magical amulet made up of a locket shared between Ruby and Roland.  This  amulet will emit sparkles when it can be put to some use and relate the story of Ruby's family and removal magical effects that can occur on others as long as you also have one of their personal treasured possessions.

Magic has an important role to play in this story as you complete tasks while searching for magical flowers and morphing objects which can appear at any time.  A fly-out indicator on the left side of the screen will indicate when a magic flower or morphing item is available for discovery in the current scene.

While searching for Ruby and dealing with the wolf, you will need to tackle numerous tasks plus meet other characters who accompany their dialogue with a visual display of their thoughts.  You will also need to mix an occasional potion to carry out certain tasks.  From time to time, you will be faced by a variety of mini game puzzles that sometimes offer a choice of Casual or Hard version to solve.

Variety also occurs during the different Hidden Object action appearing at different times.  Sometimes words are used to list the require items you need to look for but on occasions the list might be made up of silhouettes, pieces of the current scene, unidentified pairs and stencils which fit over part of the scene.  As well as find the required items, sometimes you might need to replace items within the scene in their correct position.

Concentrating mainly on static graphics, apart from an occasional magical outbreak, the game features a number of well drawn scenes.  I did feel the game took a little time to get into the flow of the story but it was generally worth the effort for full enjoyment.

You download Living Legends - The Red Trace from Gamehouse.com where it is priced at $19.99 or from Big Fish Games priced at £14.74.  System requirements for this title call for a 1.8 GHz processor with 1024MB of RAM and 1.98GB of hard disk space running Windows 7 and later.
