Dremel Precision Tools

Image of author
Here not one but two exciting precision tools for the home hobbyist. First do not confuse these items with toys they are definitely not, these items are tools for the home hobbyist. First an engraving stylus and then a quality soldering iron.

Dremel Stylus

First the dual tin that it comes in, the top part is divided into various compartments to store bits and pieces while they are a work in progress. The second larger part is what holds the stylus and the charger as well as various parts to fit on the stylus. It is powered by a Lithium-Ion battery to enable you to work in restricted areas.

The stylus itself is shaped like a backward facing gun. The holding arm is 10.5x3.5x4.5cm. The horizontal part ending in the stylus (without anything fitted) is 13.5x4x4cm the total weight of the gun is 285grams. Once you are used to the backward facing use it sits comfortably in the hand. There are two controls on the top to switch the unit on/off and a separate rotating wheel to set the speed (1-10) on the back edge.

The charger unit is 7.5cm tall and 12.5cm wide and 13cm long without the gun sitting in it. There are three slots in the base of the gun that locate onto three prongs in the base of the charger unit. The total height with the gun in the charger is 17cm. The hard wired power lead is just over two metres in length.

Sad to say there is a 68 page safety instruction booklet but the first four pages does contain useful information about the various fitments to do certain jobs. There is a large colour poster showing various bits attached and with a few hints about use. Apart from the tips and grinders included you can of course purchase other items for specific jobs. Some of the tips and grinders can be stored around the edges of the charger to allow things to stay with the unit.

Doing my Internet searches found the Dremel Stylus Lithium-Ion 1100-15 at a best price of £59.99 from the first link below.

Dremel Versatip

This time the tin is inside a cardboard box outside which is the 80 page instruction booklet (remember gas is dangerous) but the first couple of pages tell you about the various tips and items inside the box. There is a smaller poster with one side offering tips and advice and the other showing what else is available from Dremel. There is one sheet of paper inside the tin and this warns you not to overfill the tank in twenty languages.

The tool is 23cm long with the tip supplied fitted. At this point (no pun intended) it is only 1mm around. The thickest point is around 8cm back and this is 3cm with the back 10cm (the tank) being a little less but perfectly round.

There are five different heads two special spanners and a plastic hood as well as a tube of wire solder and a couple of small tins.

As a total novice in the hobbyist arena I felt I could do with a few more instructions on use for the product to get results.

Doing my Internet searches found the Dremel 2000 Versatip at a best price of £33.99 including free delivery from the first link below.
