A present, as yes ‘Christmas is Coming’

Normally I get a lot of ideas from ‘Christmas In July’ events, of course with the Pandemic there were none but one clever PR company sent links in a very large PDF file with some of the items available to review during what is normally a quiet month August and here is the first of those offerings a pair of pocket pruners that are also a multi-tool.

I am certainly not a gardener and I am sure anyone who spends hours in their garden everyday will have several pairs of secateurs of different sizes. However someone who has a few plants may think this is a great set of tools as it not just a collapsible pair of pruners but also a total of thirteen tools in the arms of the pruners.

On day one I was cooking a tinned pie the sort you get from Poundland and my can opener would not go through three points on the tin lid. I needed an old fashioned tin opener the sort that hooks into the lid and pulls that is one of the tools so my dinner could be cooked without resorting to a chisel and possibly a visit to A & E.

The tool is 10x3.2x2cm and weights 198 grams this is folded to fit easily into a jacket or trouser pocket; however it unfolds and is then 16cm long and 6.5cm wide at the handle ends.

The first of the tools that fold out from the handles is a 6cm long serrated blade saw. Next is a bottle opener. A small flat ended screwdriver, next an Awl followed by a large flat headed screwdriver that has 4mm, 5mm and 6mm nut wrenches in the blade, this completes one arm of the tool.

The other arm has a file that has a 5cm ruler on its back; the next is the can opener that has already seen service mentioned above. The next is a Philips screwdriver and finally a 5.5cm blade knife.

While I feel it’s unlikely that most people will ever use all the tools this is handy to keep in the pocket for odd jobs when the single correct tool remains absent from your toolbox and certainly although there is a knife blade there are both two sizes of flat headed screwdriver and a Philips offering to stop the pen knife blade being used for tasks it was not designed for.

Returning to the main tool the pruners I used it on an unruly plant that snags me every time I go out – no more – as the two pairs of secateurs that I have still remain AWOL.

The Pocket Pruner Multitool is available directly from Trouva's website for £22.49.
