One of Adobes major products is Acrobat, almost all of us will have a copy of three of the Acrobat Reader that is mostly bundled with applications as it saves the manufacturers printing expensive manuals.
Whichever camp you are in regarding printed manuals they are few and very far between nowadays. However Acrobat creates the PDF files we all read when the hardware or software does not work correctly, it costs a lot of money and is not really an option for the small creator. There are a number of clone applications out there and ScanSoft - more famous for scanning software - produce one of the best.
Here I am looking at their Converter software that is two packages in one as it allows you to create PDF files and or convert PDF files to fully formatted Word documents and now in version 2, also the far more difficult forms.
Should you only need to do one or other of the two jobs you could choose to purchase only PDF Converter 2 or PDF Create! 2. Both Converter and Create! purchased by themselves have a SRP of 2/3 of the price of the Professional version. However be aware that if the PDF file is locked or has restricted functionality by the author you will not be able to do all things you may wish to do with that piece of PDF work.
Assuming that you have rights to edit the PDF files you can change or update the contents at will. Not having to own a copy of Adobe Acrobat can save you a lot of money, the typical price for a copy of Acrobat is £240 for the standard version while the profession version is £370. The vast majority of what does can be done by this ScanSoft Professional product at less than £60.
Being able to bring documents of varying types together in one format solves the problem of a person not having all the applications required to read the various files. For example a word processing document, a spreadsheet and a presentation. All three can easily be converted to a single PDF file.
Going the other way you may want to have a Word document and what you receive is a PDF file providing you have the rights you can easily use ScanSoft PDF Converter 2 Professional to break the PDF and turn it into Word format and importantly save all the layout and formatting information. Until now doing the same for forms has been difficult, and in a lot of cases, impossible. Now a static form in PDF can be changed to a Word document simply and quickly.
Should you receive a locked PDF file you can obtain and enter the correct password and then work with it as if it was unlocked when dispatched. It is possible to specify a range of pages to convert this is very useful if you only wish to work on a small range of pages and of course it saves time.
Both modules have easy to follow Wizards so even a novice user can quickly get up to speed using either or both modules. Not a gadget that will apply to the majority or people but for those who need it, many, many, hours can be saved in retyping to make even a small change.
