Canon IXUS 275HS

Anyone who wants a very easy to use camera that takes extremely good images and can also take video from a unit which can slip into even the smallest pocket, should be looking at the Canon IXUS range and this tiny offering is no exception.

The Canon IXUS 275 compact digital camera measures 10x5.5x2cm, the last figure can increase by another 3.5cm when the lens is fully extended. The camera weights a tiny 144grams.

The left side is clear, the right side also looks the same apart from the anchor point for the supplied wrist strap until you look closely when you see it is a cover behind which there are mini HDMI and AV sockets.

The base has the solid battery bay where you also insert any SD card you might use; further along the base is a tripod screw.

The face has the 12x optical lens and above and to the right of this the 2x.5cm flash. The top has a small button for on/off, a large button for shutter release this has telephoto zoom outside it and finally a three position slider to select shooting or replay. Just below this on the right side of the back are two pairs of well marked buttons and between them the ubiquitous five position joystick control. To the left of this is the 6x4cm TFT screen which dominates the unit.

Still images can be captured in 4:3, 16:9, 3:2 or 1:1. Each has four capture sizes L, M1, M2 or S. In 4:3 these choices are 20MP, 10MP, 3MP or VGA.

The video it can capture is also rather good and this is in three sizes Full HD (1920x1080), HD (1280x720) or VGA (640x480).

When capturing either still or video overlaid at the top of the TFT is the battery state, number of images available to capture in the currently selected size, number or minutes and seconds of video capture in the selected size and the selected mode, just below this at the top right is the flash mode and that is all other screens showing far more information are available but this clear screen mode is ideal for the novice allowing them to concentrate on the image they want to capture.

As with any camera – for novice or other user – start with Auto but then after familiarizing yourself move onto the 15 scene modes to get that extra from it before later moving to the program modes where you and not the camera make the choices.

As far as flash goes it is efficient and if you let it choose whether or not to fire it will make the correct choice for you.

I got some very nice images and some rather good video with this very small unit. Do not make the mistake of thinking of this IXUS unit as a basic camera it is not and it has features that not long ago were only available in the very top range of cameras.

This is an ideal camera both for the novice and those beyond that simply because of its lack of size it is useful for everyone.

The Canon IXUS is available from the link below for £104 with free delivery.
