HP Deskjet 3720

This is said to be the world’s smallest A4 All In One unit, being small you lose the option to have a flatbed scanner as that would increase the size but the sheet fed scanner works well and the unit is ideal to use remotely with a mobile phone.

Unusually for me I started by downloading a small App to my phone and was able to print scan and copy within around a minute. The registered link then let me download the required basic software to a PC to print, in order to scan I needed to download another piece of software. While both these worked the speed angle might be a problem as the connection was via an IP address and output of both print and scans was slow.

So I then attacked things from a more conventional standpoint and used the provided CD to load the full software suite via USB to see what could be achieved. This took around 6 minutes and took around 270MB of hard disc space but this includes extra software not available for SmartPhone use.

Now I have the option to use it from the SmartPhone via IP address the computer via IP address or USB.

The unit is 40x17x11.5cm closed but put out the back – the paper input tray – and this adds 7.5cm to the depth of the unit.

Printing via USB is reasonably quick at around 5PPM for monochrome, an A4 image in best quality on photo paper took just over 2½ minutes.

When working from the PC you can select either IP Address or USB from the printer driver page but as these both start with HP it might be confusing and it may be easier to make the selection via the icon it creates on the Desktop where the printing method is clearly defined.

The rear has the two pin mains lead connection as well as the USB one.

The central third of the top – over the scanner – has the user controls, on/off on the left, towards the right edge is a tiny 2.4x1.8cm display that has colour or monochrome touch buttons below it, to the right of these are two columns of three buttons which are easy enough to work out what they do from their illustrations.

To scan place a sheet of paper face down in front of this bar and the scanner will grip it and pull it through to the rear part and if you have paper in the input printer tray it will fold upwards in front of it, if not it will exit in a straight line.

There are two cartridges that insert in the unit quite easily if you follow the Getting Started sheet. They are quite small so printing costs could be high if you use the unit a lot – not what it was designed for – but you can reduce costs by the HP Instant Ink and you are offered a three month free trial of the service with this unit.

I was happy with the print quality, printing via USB was reasonably quick via IP address was slow but it’s a great and easy way to print or scan from your SmartPhone and the tiny free App downloads quickly.
