Honor MagicBook 14

This is a small and light 14inch screen notebook with an AMD processor from Honor. It is a fast product, so what if anything is there that could be improved, first it is not that cheap but then all the components are high end, second there is only a single SSD drive of 256GB divided into ‘C’ and ‘D’ and on an office desk you could be short of connections.

The Honor MagicBook 14 measures 32x21x1.5cm the last figure is the maximum, it weighs 1371 grams.

The only other things in the box are a 1.7 metre USB ‘C’ to USB ‘C’ lead and a 13amp plug with USB ‘C’ out on the top. This however is a 65 watt fast charge module so a 70% charge from empty takes 70 minutes and in my tests a discharge rate of 10% per hour when streaming music and keeping the screen live takes place. I also tested some Bluetooth earbuds – review to follow – and then the discharge rate was 13.5% per hour. Finally playing video uses 16% per hour. The recharge from totally empty took just 90 minutes.

Going around the outside starting with the left has USB ‘C’ connection which is also the charge method, USB and HDMI out. The front is twin pin hole microphones, the right side has headphone socket and a further USB port, the back is clear as the lid goes back to 180 degrees. The base has three speaker vents that are just in front of the pads these give a good amount of sound there are three pads the two at the left and right front are 3x.5cm and at the rear the other pad is 27.5x.5cm the pads hold the unit firmly and there is no danger of scratching furniture.

The viewable screen is 30.5x16.5cm and this gives the notional diagonal imperial screen measurement of 14inches. The bezels are .5cm for the sides and top with the base being 2cm.

The keyboard has 80 keys with the alpha and numeric keys being full size. There is 2cm clear either side, 3cm clear behind the keyboard and 8cm clear in front. The 12x6.5cm trackpad is mounted centrally in this space so there is 10cm clear each side of it.

The screen is 1920x1080 (Full HD) and it is magnified to 125% as default but can be used perfectly well at 100%.

It has an AMD Ryzen 5 processor running at 2.1GHz and 8GB of RAM with 6.94GB usable. The storage is a 256GB SSD split into ‘C’ and ‘D’, just under 80GB on ‘C’, and, ‘D’ is 142GB of those figures there are 50 and 67GB free, so either cloud storage or a USB hard drive will be required for most.

A very rapid 6 second boot up was excellent and 3 second shutdown to blank desktop.

My review period was short but the figures above did not change during that time frame.

It took me most of my review period to find the units camera, you press a FN key and part of the key flips back, I found it rather difficult to get a portrait view without tilting the keyboard.

At the time of publication the Honor MagicBook 14 is available from Amazon in space grey for £549 including free delivery.
