A Travelling Mouse

In common with many other computer users, I tend to spend more time working on a desktop system rather than a laptop. This mode of working has resulted in my being far more comfortable with a mouse rather than the built-in touchpad found on portable devices. In fact when needing to work on a laptop, my first action is always to attach a mouse rather than spend time getting to grips with touchpad control.
This practice has been made far easier by the introduction of USB technology and, more recently, by the arrival of mice designed specifically for the mobile user. No longer do you need to carry one of the more bulkier mice around with you, instead you can use one of the various mini-mice that are now available. One such device is the APC USB Optical Travel Mouse.
For those unfamiliar with this particular breed of mouse, you could easily mistake one for a toy. After all this APC mouse measures a mere 75 x 40 x 20mm (L x W x D) and is small enough to fit comfortably in the hand of a young child. But appearances can be deceptive. In fact this is a full-featured pointing device that has been shrunk in size without any reduction in functionality. Not only do you get the standard two-button control system but a rubberised, centrally positioned wheel to cover all the different types of control. Helping keep the size of the mouse to a minimum is the use of optical technology rather than the more bulky ball method for detecting movement.
Size, or the lack of it, is not the only noticeable feature of this mouse. Connection to the laptop is via USB which necessitates the use of a lead. Unlike more traditional mice, this lead is not attached to the rear of the mouse but is affixed to the front. It also makes use of a self-locking scroll wheel so that the lead can smoothly switch between a 67 centimetre length when in use to just 4.5 centimetres when in storage mode. You simple pull on the lead and it extends to an appropriate length with an additional pull being the means of releasing the locking device so causing the lead to retract into the confines of the scroll wheel.
With its two-toned, grey and black livery with red APC logo, this mouse is distinctive in appearance. Despite its small size, it is easy to control although I found the rubberised wheel rather fiddly to operate. While I would not consider using this device on a desktop system, it has quickly become an indispensable additional to my laptop.
The mouse will work on any Windows system from 98SE onwards or Mac with one free USB port. Price should be in the region of £14.
