After a busy month it's taken me a little time to update the winners page with the May results - but I've got there now. May saw three winners in our power saving month. Members Zebby168 and tigerwuds both won OWL power meters
You only have a few days left to enter the June competition - an excellent chance to get your digital photos printed out for all to see with our Photobox prize. Congratulations to winners from last month - and best of luck to those that have entered our June competition!
We're more used to giving out prizes than actually winning anything ourselves here at GadgetSpeak. With our monthly prize-draw, we're used to making one lucky member happy each month (and sometimes more than one!)
It was a little bit of a surprise then when a sparkling new iPod Touch arrived on the doorstep a couple of days back. My initial assumption was that someone had arranged a review sample - a quick check around the office however showed this not to be the case.
A hunt back through my emails found that I'd been entered into a prize-draw for completing a survey about a month ago. Entering competitions isn't something I do often and I'd completely missed this one somehow.
I now have a *very* smug grin on my face - and a shiny new toy that no doubt will see great service helping me review various iPod accessories over the coming months. I will of course post a full review of the iPod Touch itself once I've had a play :-)
Initial impressions are good - and my Sony PSP is looking positively clunky.
There are only a few of days in this months prize draw - so if you've not yet entered then you need to get your skates on! Members - you just have to log in. The rest of you just have to follow the instructions!
It's taken a little time to get this months competition up due to a hectic first week to the month.
First of all a reminder - to enter you have to be a member (free - just complete this form). If you are a member you have to login at least once during the month. Not logged in? Just click here!
I'm sure most of you have noticed all the stories about energy bills on the rise - we certainly have. With both gas and electricity prices on a steep upward trajectory we thought we'd focus this months competition on energy saving ideas.
We have three prizes this month - one for each of three lucky winners.
The first two prizes are OWL electricity monitors. We reviewed one of these here back in October last year (you can read the OWL review here). They give you a very clear display of how much electrical power you're using at any time - instantly. It can be a little scary at first when you turn on the oven!
It very quickly becomes second nature though to check the meter before bed to see what you've left on. In our case it's most usually the kids computer or Play Station. We're trying to train them! Placing the big LCD display panel somewhere visible quickly helps you see when you're using more power than you expect. You can also quickly see the effects of switching off high-power lights or replacing them with low-energy equivalents.
Our third prize is a "Bye-Bye Standby" starter kit. The kit includes three mains adaptors and a remote control. A very simple idea - when you go to bed (or away on holiday) simply press the control on the remote and power is removed from all the devices connected through the controlled sockets. Each socket can be connected to a multi-socket lead and control up to 1KW of devices.
This months winners will have the means of both doing their bit for the planet and reducing the effect of rising fuel prices on their pocket! If you're not a member then you can join here - it's free and can be fun :-)
If you are a member make sure you've logged in to be entered!
We have a great prize draw this month for members in the form of a Brennan JB7 media juke box (thank you to Brennan for providing this excellent product!). This is stand-alone unit with an internal 40G byte hard disk and integral 60W amplifier. To make it standa alone it has a front loading CD player - simple slot in each of your CDs one by one and the Brennan copies and indexes your music onto it's internal drive. So easy anyone can use it. You can read our review here.
Apologies : Those of your that have read last nights weekly update (1st April) may well have noticed the rather confused competition announcement - combining a picture of the Brennan JB7 with the text from last months competition. No - this was not an April Fools joke - just a mix up on my part at gone 2am uploading the new files. Well - uploading all but one!
Apologies for the confusion - I should probably have had one more cup of coffee!

This competition created a lot of interest. Partly I think because the JB7 is a very good idea very well executed, but also because in these days of ever increasing complexity it's quite refreshing for someone to stand up and make something simple that does not try to do everything.
May's competition? We're just finishing the copy - it'll be up very soon. Until then it'll be a surprise. Everyone that's already logged in this month is of course automatically entered!
In the competition to provide the most realistic drive in a computer game, Thrustmaster have launched the "Thrustmaster Ferrari GT Experience", bearing the famous racing marque. From the company's press release they "aim to offer gamers a unique experience by allowing them to enjoy intense racing sensations with a racing wheel proudly bearing the legendary prancing horse emblem"
So what have they done to justify such a claim?
Well - it definitely looks the part with high quality textured rubber grips. Gear change has been incorporated into the steering wheel in true Formula 1 style with up-down click changing. To add to the realism a shock vibration device allows you to feel the terrain as you tear around the race track. They have also incorporated something they are calling 'bungee cord' - a technique for realistically implementing steering wheel resistence as you turn.
The pedal arrangement is also highlighted as a key feature with progressive movement, good pedal spacing giving the experienced racer the opportunity to employ heel-toe techniques.
The Thrustmaster works with the PS/2, PS/3 and standard PCs.
It should work with most racing games, with the following games making the most of the new features : Formula One Championship Edition, Ridge Racer 7 and Colin McRae: DIRT.
Can it live up to the claims? We're hoping to take a sample for a test-drive shortly so we can provide an indepth GadgetSpeak review and let you know how it performs in practice!
If you can't wait for the review, you can read more on the Thrustmaster web-site
To accompany last months competition, Humax also offered GadgetSpeak visitors and members the opportunity of buying the Humax 19" LCD Digital TV with a £100 discount - reducing the price by a third to £199, making an already excellent product even better value.
Reader 'MCS' had problems using the discount code and posted a comment on the review. When we investigated with Humax we discovered a problem that would affect people using the FireFox or Safari browser. They've now been able to fix the problem.
As a thank you to GadgetSpeak and our readers they've offered to extend the £100 discount for an additional two weeks - expiring now on the 15th April. For details and the discount code take a look at the review.
So... if you've not won in our competition you can still get hold of one of these excellent products at a very reasonable price.
It also goes to show that if you have problems - it's always worth telling people!
