Desktop Publishing initially was extremely expensive and indeed with some of the high end products you can still pay the proverbial arm and a leg. However I have just produced a nice looking page with a background colour, two columns of rubbish text and an image in less than five minutes.
I would tend to write my text in favourite word processor and use it for spell and grammar checking but Write Plus module is within the package so you could use that at a pinch.
Installing both the main and the bonus application from the same CD took only around five minutes and used by todays standards a modest 150MB of hard disc space. Double click on the main application yes I will tell you what its called later and you get the choice of six items the last of which is Cancel.
Use a Page Wizard is the first choice and this really hand holds the novice though the project and not just what you may consider what DTP is but also for such things as Family Fun, Greetings Cards, Labels, Notices, Flyers and even designing a Web Site.
Choice two is Start from Scratch with a blank page or pages, this could be landscape or portrait as well as booklets, banners, posters and more. Choice three is to open a previous publication, choice four is a very useful Tour and finally Online Resources that allows you to visit two sites from this company.
Once you progress a little you will probably leave the handholding behind and work with the interface yourself. Even if you have not used this product before I would suggest a couple of handheld attempts plus a look at The Tour and then you are ready to fly alone.
The whole interface is easy to use and the Schemes, Colours, Shades and all the tools are easy to find with nothing buried, a nice product and even though it is far from new this is version six it is probably worth the price in its own right, however there is more.
3D Plus 2 is an application that makes designing both still and animated 3D objects and text a breeze. Here I would suggest a little more time is spent with the Wizards but again you should be producing something to be proud of in just a few minutes. There are large libraries of pre defined shapes that you can easily manipulate and change to suit your design.
So for those who have not already guessed the main product is Serif Page Plus 6 and together 3D Plus 2 form Select Desktop Publishing well worth £9.99 of anyones cash to buy the current version of Page Plus would cost ten times the cost of this package.
