The Nintendo Wii console has reached these shores, beating the Sony PS3 to market (not difficult). Rumors are that the new console is selling fast.
Has anyone got one? Would love to hear your first impressions. Was it worth the wait? Should I be waiting for Sony to eventually ship into the UK?
Or have you all wrapped yours up for Christmas morning!
We're off to The Best of Stuff show this weekend where we're promised the chance to play with this long-awaited and much hyped product. Maybe we'll see you there?
With Sony having to delay European shipments until after the 2006 Christmas season coupled with the Nintindo Wii launch on 8th December I imagine Sony will be eager to persuade potential customers to wait, and that the wait will be worth it! Pop along to the show in London and take a look for yourselves, and then come back to GadgetSpeak and tell us what you think!
Looks like Sony are going to miss yet another Christmas with their PlayStation 3 console - in Europe at least. This time it appears to be unable to source sufficient components to meet world-wide demand and so is going to concentrate on the key markets of America and it's home region - Europe misses out again, but then if Europe were to pull it's finger out maybe we'd make some of our own products!
Not only is Sonys position in the gaming market under threat from continued delays but also their hope of getting BluRay established as the next defacto standard high density (HD-DVD) format. Having been on the receiving end of Sony Betamax and numerous attempts by Sony to 'go their own way' (I have a Sony MP3 player that only plays the proprietary ATRAC format) I personally think that's a good thing! I love Sony products, but they win not because of proprietary formats but despite them, which can only work for so long.
What's your view on this? Are you going to hang in there or opt for the XBox 360, or maybe even the Nintindo Wii console?
I don't usually find the time to 'have a play', but I happened to be checking the NTL web site and noticed that because I subscribe to their 2M broadband product I get free access to their 'broadband plus' area. I'm sure they used to charge for this and I really couldn't see the point. Now it's included in my package I thought I may as well see what all the fuss is about (you still have to pay £3.99 per month for it if you're on NTLs 1M broadband tariff).
This isn't meant to be a formal review of their product, just first impressions. Maybe if I stick with it I will do a full review. We'll see!
I haven't found a formal description of this product on their site, but it seems to comprise 4 main areas : Music plus, Photos plus, Games plus and Kids plus.
First of all - getting into it! The sign-up page simply requires you to enter your name and NTL email address and accept the terms and conditions. First problem - the link to open the terms and conditions uses JavaScript to pop-up a little window. It doesn't work. So if you want to proceed you have to check that you've read the T&Cs, cross your fingers and hope you're not signing away your life!
The homepage for Broadband Central (http://www.ntlworld.com/broadbandcentral) shows a cluttered screen with links to the various services offered. Unfortunately each one of these that you click on brings up a new window with a biggish delay telling you that you are being signed in. This doesn't really give a very good impression for broadband, the whole point of which is to be fast! That said, the various services are offered by different vendors, with NTL providing the glue. You seem to get a good selection.
At least some of the services only work with Internet Explorer, which personally I take offense at being a dedicated FireFox user.
Unfortunately a number of the other services just seem to generate the message :
again, not a very good advert. On the whole a somewhat frustrating experience so far. Maybe I'll have another go sometime when I've nothing better to do.
The list of features supposedly offered does seem pretty good, if only they worked.
Now - where's my glass of wine?
Already half way through August, and the nights here are starting to close in. It's only 9:30pm here and already pitch black outside.
A couple of things are happening here and I thought I'd blog about them...
Firstly, as I said last time I wrote, we've now turned on weekly site update emails. These emails will include a summary of the articles, blogs and discussions started in the previous seven days. The first update should be sent this Wednessday (23rd August I think). If you've subscribed to email updates then you should receive that one, if not then why not give it a try?
GadgetSpeak now has a lot of product reviews. Each is filed under an appropriate topic. Finding a specific article is quite easy - just use the search page, which incidently we improved a lot a couple of months back. How do you find other related articles though? Say you're interested in HP printers. You find the first through searching - what then? Well now, we've started to create 'related article' lists. It's a bit of an experiment at the moment, but if you go to one of the products in a list, in the right hand column you'll see a list of Related Product Reviews and you'll be able to click through other reviews.
Back to the HP printer reviews, if for example you'd just read the HP OfficeJet 4315 review, and it's not quite your cup of tea. In the right hand column you'll see links to the HP OfficeJet 4355, HP Photosmart 8050 and others. Is this usefu? Let us know by adding a comment to this blog. We're always interested in your feedback about any aspect of our site.
Finally, many of you will be aware of our 5x5 smiley awards, the most recent of which was awarded to the excellent Canon Ixus 800IS. Well, we've given out only 9 of these awards since they started. That's to be expected, how many of your gadgets are perfect? It seemed a pity though not to have something for those almost perfect gadgets that just missed a 5x5 award. To rectify this we've introduced our 'highly commended' stamp. We've retrospectively awarded this to well regarded products with the result that just over 40 products qualify. Is your favourite in the list? If not then you need to get writing!
I'd also like to encourage you all to help improve GadgetSpeak by writing down your experiences with gadgets. If you'd rather jot your notes down informally then write a blog entry - if you'd like to write a full review then articles are what you want.
I have just been reading a 31 page review on the Internet of the new Sony answer to Minolta's D5 Digital SLR.
First of all it is nice that Sony are still creating the same environment where the Minolta lenses and accessories will still function on the new A100 camera.
It seems Sony have upgraded the camera from 6Megapixels to 10 Megapixels and have added extra functions. But alas some of the functions do not seem to be as effective as the old D5. But this is probably understandable as Sony have only been at it for a year and I am hoping that by the time they bring out a replacement for my own D7, they will have perfected their techniques in this area.
Watch this space.
