Dell 944 All In One+

Published in Printers/Scanners on 18 Jan 2006
This is more than an All In One but less than a Multi Function unit, confused? The difference between the two is that Multi Function units send and receive faxes, this can ‘sort of’ send them.
canon A410 camer

Canon PowerShot A410

Published in Cameras on 16 Jan 2006
A compact camera, ideal as a first digital camera, the controls are easy to use and anyone coming from a film camera will be delighted with the results.
3.2 seems to be the words for this unit. 3.2x optical zoom and 3.2mega pixel the latter to be enough to produce a decent A4 print. stated Having recently reviewed a number of quite complex offerings it is nice to look at something that is - in it's setup configuration - point and shoot. The top has two buttons on/off and the shutter.

Portal 3 DAB Radio

Published in Entertainment on 13 Jan 2006
This unit is both FM and DAB, it also allows you to replay something from the recent past, in my tests this was up to 262 seconds but this is probably enough for most.
This is battery or mains, in battery mode you would need 6x'C' cells. I am lucky enough to have good DAB reception in my area but before you go out and buy why not check yours by inputting your postcode at www.ukdigitalradio.com   I think the quality of DAB radios has improved considerably since the early units. Now I find good reception wherever I use it in the house.

Britannica

Published in Software on 11 Jan 2006
Normally I look at the two main encyclopaedias head to head, this year the latest Encyclopaedia Britannica version was rather late in arriving.

Art Pad from AceCad

Published in Misc on 9 Jan 2006
Not a CAD package but a drawing package, this allows you to doodle - or with practice – to get some quite impressive drawings on the screen and into your PC.
I am sure most readers will have heard of Wacom and maybe other graphics tablet makers. These offerings were always rather large and certainly enabled exact work to be conducted.

Mice from Microsoft

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 6 Jan 2006
Here I am looking at two rather similar rodents, one for notebooks (smaller) and one for desktops, both are optical (no balls) one is wireless while the other is PS/2 & USB.

Sibelius V4

Published in Software on 4 Jan 2006
Sounds Classical? It could be, but equally this score writing software, could be used for Pop, Jazz, Funk or any other musical type you care to think of.
I must first state I am not a musician, however I have numerous friends and colleagues who are, in fact I could name drop several composers and conductors whose names are often mentioned.   Sibelius has been around for many years, I believe it started as an Atari product. I know one high profile user who only swapped to a PC because developments on the Atari were running behind the PC and in his position he needed to be at the cutting edge.
canon SelphyDS81

Canon Selphy DS810

Published in Printers/Scanners on 2 Jan 2006
So what is Selphy, it is a photo printer that prints 15x10cm images. Like most other inkjet manufacturers Canon have a unit, however in shape anyway is rather different.
It is 22x22x10cm in the closed position, it weights less than two kilos. However not only will you need around 10cm of space in front when in use as paper is stored and delivered at the front of the unit. You also need to allow close to 10cm behind as the sheet is fed out the rear of the unit so it is not bent at all during printing.

HP Pavilion Notebook

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 30 Dec 2005
This is described as a consumer notebook, however I have no doubt that many executives would be quite happy to use this widescreen offering in the office.

Roadstar Boombox TVD5004

Published in Entertainment on 28 Dec 2005
A TV, a Radio, a DVD player, a CD Player and it can also be used as an amplifier. This Roadstar Boombox can do so much from such a small enclosure.

Brother MFC-9420CN

Published in Printers/Scanners on 26 Dec 2005
This is a multi function unit – as it has a fax – but it is not an inkjet, a multi function colour laser that prints as fast in colour as it does in black (sic).

JVC Hard Disc Camcorder (GZ-MG30EK)

Published in Cameras on 23 Dec 2005
Not long ago all Camcorders recorded to tape, then some were dual tape and memory card. Now it seems that hard disc is all the rage.
I tend to see lots more digital cameras than camcorders, however this may have an advantage in that it is easier to see the developments as I only see two or three units a year.   It is light at less than 400grams, the dimensions are 11x6.5x6cm, the width increases by 7cm with the TFT open. The 5x4cm screen is twistable through 270degrees meaning that you can still view when shooting at strange angles.

Acer AL2021 Panel

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 21 Dec 2005
Just six months ago I attached this unit to my main work PC, it is normally in use for around ten hours a day. It has also done stints on other systems and even connected to notebooks.

Star Office 8

Published in Software on 19 Dec 2005
How many products do you know that contains versions for four different operating systems in the same box? Just for good measure it includes on a separate CD an email client and a web browser.
Last April I saw what I was told was Gold code for a product that would be released in May 'come hell or high water'. Well it seems that it did not ship until the end of November and then only through Avanquest. I have no doubt that large corporate customers could download it sooner. Some people use the free version called 'Open Office' but that for logical reasons it will always be at least one version behind.
Quite a combination, I first reviewed the iPlayer+ in May, the US Robotics connectivity was immanent but by the time I got the iPlayer+ back it was December and by then a third component.
pure dmx 50 compact DAB hif

Pure Digital DMX50

Published in Entertainment on 14 Dec 2005
This looks like a three piece stack system, however it has CD, DAB and FM radio as well as some extra capabilities, a pair of speakers and speaking as a total style nonentity I think it looks good.
The Pure DMX-50 is 16.5x31x23cm. It is a single unit but looks like it is a three piece stack as the face is divided into three sections horizontally. The top piece has a 6.5x4cm monochrome 5.5 line display. While it is mono you can alter substantially the brightness and contrast of it, useful as it displays a clock when the unit is in standby. The display has three soft buttons either side to perform various tasks according to what it is doing.
What do you do when you need that special Christmas Card, what do you do when that photo needs attention, this and lots more are covered by the Christmas Creativity Pack at a very small price.

Sudoku Heaven

Published in Entertainment on 9 Dec 2005
This is likely to be my last Dream Toys article for this year as items that have not arrived by now are unlikely to surface, here a handheld Sudoku game plus other Sudoku goodies from other sources.
kodak v550 camer

Kodak V550

Published in Cameras on 7 Dec 2005
Kodak are certainly a name in photography, no doubt most of our grandparents had or have a Box Brownie in their lofts. Now they are a company producing digital cameras.
This is described as a pocket camera, it is 9x5.5x2cm, the width expands to 5cm with the lens open. It weights just over 150grams. It has a huge 5x3.8cm TFT display but also does have a viewfinder, however this is close to the edge and I think you would soon prefer to use the display except in really bright light.
This is a reasonable 2.1 set of speakers with a built in amplifier and the ability to input sound from handheld devices such as an MP3 player. As yet I have not mentioned the ‘big big plus’.

Is 3G now a maturing service?

Published in Phones on 2 Dec 2005
Companies spent a fortune on 3G licences, are they now beginning to offer something that users will want, use, and dare I say, need?
hp photosmart 8050 printe

HP Photosmart 8050

Published in Printers/Scanners on 30 Nov 2005
This HP inkjet printer is quite wide but the depth makes you think surely this cannot print A4 it does and for good measure it’s borderless, however this is also a rapid unit.
The is 45.5x32x17cm and this includes the power and USB leads inserted. Perhaps it's the lack of height that makes it appear small, certainly it would fit on most shelves  without any problem. You only ever need access to the front. The paper sits in a drop down tray - face down - and is delivered face up on a shelf just above.

Acer Veriton 7800

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 28 Nov 2005
Not just another bland PC in a tower case, I first saw a pre production sample six months ago, after much nagging from me I got a production model for a short loan recently.

Goodmans 2GB MP3 Player

Published in Entertainment on 25 Nov 2005
It’s full name is ‘Goodmans Personal MP3 / WMA Jukebox’ but I think my title tells you more using far less words. It is also a voice recorder.

Store CD’s on a hard disc

Published in Entertainment on 23 Nov 2005
Although this is a piece of electrical equipment it is not connected in any way to a PC. In fact it looks about the size of an older video recorder but it can store many hundreds of CD’s
Acoustic Solutions are known for better quality Hi-Fi and amplifiers, here the all important chip is provided by 3GA. In fact 3GA and an annual event held in Cambridge for new innovations is the whole reason I knew about it. Two weeks ago a cold day in November saw me on a train to Cambridge at some horribly early hour.

Auto Route 2006

Published in Software on 21 Nov 2005
This is probably the most mature mapping package for the PC, now it even allows you to link yourself via GPS, just one of the new features for 2006.

Poker via Dream Toys

Published in Entertainment on 18 Nov 2005
Not exactly what you would call a toy but it was on show on the Flair stand at Dream Toys 2005, so something for the much bigger boys – and girls – World Poker Tour, the Tournament Set and just for good measure their Professional Card Shuffler.
No one - I hope - is suggesting that you need more than a pack of cards or so to play poker. However whenever the word 'money' is mentioned things tend to get a little serious. So if you and your mates enjoy a game then why not have all the accoutrements of the professionals and the Tournament Set distributed by Flair has all that.   It all comes in an metal case there are 300 real (11.
pure oasis DAB radi

Oasis from Pure Digital

Published in Entertainment on 16 Nov 2005
This is described as a waterproof DAB radio. Certainly it is ideal for use in a bathroom or other damp environment. The shape is novel with inbuilt handle and for good measure the sound is good as well.
The Pure Oasis DAB radio is truly portable, meaning you do not need mains, it's internal battery is capable of running it for more than twelve hours between charges. However I think you may think twice - unless you are into body building - about carrying it around while you go for a five mile walk. The dimensions are 15x14x22cm and it weights 2.6kilos. Easy enough to move - even for a child - but not something to hold for an hour or so.

Corel Photo Album 6

Published in Software on 14 Nov 2005
A product that came out of Corel’s purchase of Paint Shop Pro around a year ago. Corel have enhanced it and - being Corel - have added extra value.

Lego and Bullseye

Published in Entertainment on 11 Nov 2005
Not perhaps the best of bedfellows but not all the manufacturers from Dream Toys sent the requested items. So while I had everything planned for what goes well with what… such is life.
