My face might not be my fortune but my finger could be my passport to various computer activities.

Print, Scan, Copy and Fax

Published in Misc on 5 Oct 2004
Looking to maximise the space of your work desk? Maybe you should consider combining your printer, scanner, fax machine and photocopier into a single unit.
Lexmark's X6170 "All-in-One" product provides the functionality that covers printing, scanning and copying with built-in fax capability. On top of this, literally, the X6170 has an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) feature. Lexmark has packed all this functionality into a box that measures 48 x 25cm at the base and expanding to 50 x 52cm (W x D) at the top. The overall height is 29cm including the rear-mounted paper input tray.

Samsung SGH-P510 Camera Phone

Published in Phones on 3 Oct 2004
It’s Samsung calling! This time I have been flipping open the Samsung SGH-P510 camera phone.
Have you noticed that all mobile phones, well at least the ones that I have used, always position the on/off key on the right side of the unit? This is not meant to be taken as a criticism, rather more of an observation. But it does go to show how technology is re-enforcing the dominance that the right hand has over the left in modern society.

Let Your Finger be the Key

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 28 Sep 2004
Instead of letting your fingers do the work, you could use them as an aid to your memory. To discover how, read on!

So It's Moto To You

Published in Phones on 27 Sep 2004
Is yours a standard, one-piece model or maybe you prefer a flip top? Then again there are sliders and swivellers. Currently I am using a Motorola V80 which puts me in the swivel category.

Managing Digital Media

Most people have a collection of videos, photographs and music which they want to preserve. If you fall into this category then help could be at hand – so read on.

Adding extra channels to your basic television viewing could not be easier. All you need is one of the new generation of set-top boxes such as the Hauppauge DEC110-T.
This digital terrestrial receiver, measuring 160 x 140 x 35mm and capable of bringing the Freeview channels into your living room, comes boxed in a package that contains all the bits and pieces you are likely to need. For a start you get the DEC110-T unit but more of this piece of equipment later. There is a remote control powered by two AAA batteries and a 12v power supply for the actual unit.

Playing the N-Gage Game

Published in Entertainment on 12 Sep 2004
Ever tried playing a game on your mobile phone? Let’s face it, this is hardly the most enjoyable experience especially when compared to dedicated hand-held game devices. One possible solution could be to turn the situation around and make your phone calls from a game device.

A New Sign of the Zodiac

Published in Mobile Tech on 9 Sep 2004
So your pockets are bulging! Maybe it is because you are carrying too many devices. Perhaps one solution might be to switch to a device that combines the features of a PDA and gaming console.
Free means different things to different people. Take Freeview and free-to-air as an example. There is no subscription charge but you do need to purchase an appropriate receiver.
The Government's perceived wisdom (surely an oxymoron) is that analogue TV has had its day and will be replaced by digital broadcasts. This digital switchover is due to begin in 2007. A taster of what is to come can be experienced with the Freeview service which rose, Phoenix-like, from the debacle known as On-Digital and its monkey figurehead.

What is bright red and bears the logo of a kicking horse? Sorry but anybody whose thoughts turned to the personal chariot of a speeding German and Formula One are wide of the mark. Instead it is the latest status symbol from Acer in the form of its Ferrari notebook.
With the right tools your computer can take over many tasks that can be considered tiresome. Just image your system could be reading this document for you. Read on to find out how.

Power to the Veriton

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 25 Jul 2004
Computer manufacturers are no longer restricting themselves to internal improvements with fast CPUs and motherboard features but are also opting for a most aesthetic approach to the design of the chassis. Take the Aver Veriton series for example.

FujiFIlm xD-MP3 Device

A new digital accessory from Fujifilm could be said to have a split personality. Although entitled xD-MP3, this device combines the features of a memory card reader and pen drive with its main function of being an MP3 player.

Lexmark X1180

Published in Misc on 27 June 2004
Whether you call them an “All-in-One” or “Multi-function” device, the role is generally the same. Print, copy and scan features are integrated into a single package. Lexmark, preferring the “All-in-One” designation, has recently added the X1180 to its product portfolio.
Lexmark's new "All-in-One" kid on the block, the X1180, bears a remarkable similarity to the company's earlier X1150 model. This is not altogether surprising as the X1180 will replace the X1150 and the only way to distinguish visually between the two is to check the model number on the scanner lid. Decked out in grey over black livery, the X1180 measures 44 x 30.5cm (W x D) at the top and then tapers down to 44 x 26.5cm at the base.

LFH7670 Voice Tracer

Published in Misc on 14 June 2004
If you have trouble reading your own scrawl after a hasty note-taking session then perhaps you should consider a voice recorder as an alternative method.

NEC ND-2500 DVD Writer

Owning a rewritable DVD drive does not mean you advocate piracy. There are many legitimate uses to which you can put such as the NEC ND-2500 product.

LG7050 Camera Phone

Published in Phones on 22 Mar 2004
Having looked at the LG7100 flip top mobile phone, I was recently given the opportunity to try out the second phone making up LG’s initial offering to the UK marketplace. This was the LG7050 model which adopts a slide down approach to help reduce size and protect the LCD screen.
The phone is a 2.5G unit combining features such as MMS, WAP 2.0 and Java plus a built-in CMOS camera. As with its LG7100 phone, LG has limited its availability to a single operator on a monthly contract basis. In this case the operator is T-Mobile. In its closed state the phone measures 107 x 44 x 21.5mm (L x W x D) including the short stubby antenna.

Gyration Input

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 12 Feb 2004
While Microsoft and Logitech tend to grab the attention when it comes to wireless desktop equipment, there are other options available. One such offering has been developed by Gyration and comes with the rather mouthful, but descriptive, title of Gyration Ultra Cordless Optical Suite.

Echo Multi Charger

Published in Misc on 10 Feb 2004
While battery life is often quoted as a major factor when judging portable devices, the actual running cost of the batteries is rarely mentioned. Do you choose the more expensive rechargeable battery type or opt for the cheaper, throwaway variety? Saitek believes it can sway the balance of the argument towards the latter option with its Echo Multi Charger device.

PocketMouse Pro

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 16 Dec 2003
Those looking for a mouse that is just a little bit different from the standard rodent might like to consider the PocketMouse Pro. This wireless mouse, from the Kensington Technology Group, can store its receiver inside its own body when it is not in use.

Mini Card Reader 6 in 1

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 16 Dec 2003
Digital cameras, voice recorders, PDAs and MPEG players are all popular devices that make use of some form of flash media cards to store data. Unfortunately, due to the various formats adopted by this type of storage, problems can arise when attempting to transfer data between these devices and a computer.

Pentax Optio S4

Published in Cameras on 15 Dec 2003
What is small, silver in colour and has a 3D feature? This is not a trick question and I’ll even answer my own question. It is the Optio S4 camera from Pentax.
They may have started life as basic devices but now keyboards and mice have definitely moved on a stage or even several stages. An example of this transformation can be seen with Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop kit.

LG7100 Camera Phone

Published in Phones on 26 Nov 2003
Any visiting H G Wells type time-traveller would think that humanity was suffering from an epidemic of violent ear-ache. Everywhere you go people have a hand to their ear as if to relieve pain and seem oblivious to their surroundings. Of course it is a case of mobile phone-itus that is the cause rather than ear-ache – although having to listen to outbreaks of various ring tones and loud one-sided conversations could induce pain in the ear. Still we love mobile phones and all the new features they bring.
Up until recently I would never have associated the Korean company LG with mobile phones. This ignorance was due to the fact that LG had ignored the UK market when it came to this type of device. This situation has now changed as LG is looking to increase its market share of 5.2% that it has built up in other areas of the world.

Olympus C-350 Zoom

Published in Cameras on 7 Nov 2003
Like memories, photographs tend to fade with age. Fortunately a solution is readily available. Captured digital images can be stored and retrieved from your hard disk for printing. The results should be as vibrant and fresh as the day they were captured. You just need to match your photographic needs and financial considerations with an appropriate digital camera.
Priced at £249.99, the 3.2 mega pixel Olympus C-350 Zoom digital camera sits between budget offerings and high priced professional models. The C-350 Zoom follows the usual design format favoured by Olympus for its Camedia range of products. Silver in colour and reasonably compact in size, although I would not want to carry it around in my pocket for lengthy periods, the camera's lens remains concealed behind a sliding cover until it is needed.

Aureon 5.1 Fun Games

Published in Entertainment on 3 Nov 2003
If you promise to keep it to yourself I’ll let you into a secret. I can remember when the only choice you had for your listening pleasure was limited to mono sound. Those were the days. Now, thanks to advances in technology, we can immerse ourselves in a surround sound environment using multiple speakers. Whether it is music or gaming, the capability is now within everybody’s reach for an enhanced audio experience.

Super DVD Writer

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 16 Oct 2003
While DVD writers are fast becoming a must-have gadget, the lack of any agreement over a standard format could prove problematic. Fortunately manufacturers are now producing units that support both the DVD-RW and DVD+RW formats.
