Hand Controlled Lighting

Published in Homes and Gardens by mfereday on Sep 3, 2008
Giving your table lamp a helping hand is easy and possible with a product available from Prezzybox.com.
Recently I had the electric lighting system in my home rewired.  The positioning of some lights, which I am still adjusting to, was moved while, in a couple of cases, cord-pulled switches replaced other types of on/off methods.  One innovative technology that I did not consider as part of the rewiring process was the use of hand movements to control various lighting conditions.

Black&Decker Outdoors

Published in Homes and Gardens by paul_smart on Sep 1, 2008
Not as you may think power tools but a couple of high powered torches and then all you need to keep stuff cool or warm providing you have a cigar lighter socket nearby so ideal for days out in the car.
Black&Decker Light Bar BDLB14 Now summer is officially over maybe we will have some decent weather for those outdoor activities, the only problem is nights are drawing in so light is needed, while an ordinary torch will light you way its probably a pain to read with and certainly for things like eating not really enough. Here a 26.5cm tall light bar, it can be hung or stood on any flat surface.

A Tefal Iron

Published in Homes and Gardens by mfereday on Aug 27, 2008
I must confess that ironing does not rank near the top of my list of favourite tasks. In fact, if truth be told, I would position this particular job somewhere near, if not quite at, the bottom of those jobs I would be happy to tackle.
click image to enlarge Needs must when it comes to reviewing a product and so I took the Tefal AQUASPEED Ultracord 260 product in hand and prepared myself to work through a pile of clothes, bedding and the like that were crying out for a session with this new iron.

Sunday Outside

Published in Homes and Gardens by paul_smart on Aug 24, 2008
Sunday is no longer a rest day lots have to work but if you are away from the workplace then a nice bit of relaxation could be on the cards, here a gadget for an unusual Bluetooth Headset among other things and a cool pillow for those who suffer from a hot head.
Bluetooth Mobile Phone Mate This looks like a stylus and indeed is one, it could also be mistaken for a pen it can hang round your neck but now its real purpose it's a Bluetooth headset there is a perfectly usable earpiece and microphone that can be connected to it and this will work with the rather fussy new iPhone. So providing your phone has Bluetooth V2 you with this gadget now have a hands free phone.

Making a Quick Snack

Published in Homes and Gardens by mfereday on Aug 20, 2008
While electric toasters have been around for many years, Tefal has decided to give this type of device a make-over with a new feature.
Whether it is breakfast, mid-morning or a late-evening snack, the thought of poached egg on toast can cause the gastric juices to begin flowing - at least that is probably the reasoning behind a new product from Tefal.  The product, as you might have guessed if you had read my earlier report, is the Tefal Toast n' Egg.  Tefal has taken a two slice toaster and attached a basic food preparer to one end.

Introducing Bob

Published in Homes and Gardens by mfereday on Aug 15, 2008
Following a visit to a Christmas in July Toys event, I was re-united with one of the characters that caught my attention while there.
Recently I have been spending some time interacting with a character called Bob. I hasten to add that this particular Bob is not a re-incarnation of the Microsoft Bob originally launched back in 1995. Rather than Microsoft's failed attempt to persuade users to accept a different desktop, complete with a big yellow smiley face, for the then current Windows 3.
In these days of healthy eating, we have all been made aware that chips are loaded with oil and are not good for us. However, the Tefal Actifry which is claimed to only need 14ml of oil to fry 1kg of chips changes all that. After all, less than 2% fat is pretty good.
click image to enlarge Furthermore, another issue is that frying is one of the most dangerous activities that can be carried out in the kitchen. Don't forget that an open pan of oil on the stove is a major fire hazard while even a thermostatically controlled chip man contains more than enough oil to give terrible burns.

LG Solar Cube

Published in Homes and Gardens by paul_smart on Jul 30, 2008
Do you fancy cooking a 1.5kilo chicken in half an hour? Roast potatoes in around half that time? Well with the LG Solar Cube not only is it possible I have done it and it tastes fine and was also perfectly cooked.
The Solar Cube is 53x37x48cm you should also allow some clearance above and behind for heat dispersal. Its weight is 26kilos. Yes it does get hot when in use and if you touch it you would probably move your hand away quite quickly but I doubt you would be burnt. Around ten minutes after use it is only vaguely warm. This is a combination of Microwave, Grill, Convection Oven and Halogen source.

Images and Weather

Published in Homes and Gardens by mfereday on Jul 29, 2008
Following the recent Polaroid event I was able to check out one of the new products on display. This combined the ability to display digital images and report on the weather.
The tasks covered by multi-function devices continue to expand into new areas.  A recent example of this can be seen with a new digital photo frame from Polaroid.  Not content to displaying favourite photos, this device, with the less than memorable designation of XSU-00770B, brings together a 7-inch digital photo frame combined with current weather information.

Displaying Your Images

Kodak combines images and music with touch border technology in its new digital picture frame series.
With its long standing reputation and experience in the field of photographic development, it was a natural progression for Kodak to get involved in the manufacture of digital displays. The result is the Kodak Easyshare Digital Picture Frame series currently consisting of 7, 8 and 10-inch models.

Beyond Innovations 2008

Published in Homes and Gardens by mfereday on Jul 5, 2008
It was a rainy morning, more like an April downpour really but this was July, as I avoided the puddles on my way to check out the new products from Tefal, Krups and Rowenta under the banner of Beyond Innovation 2008.
Situated in , within a stone's throw of Oxford Street and Bond Street, the Music Room is one of those locations that are often used by companies to show off their wares to the press and trade customers. My previous visit had been to check out new products from Sony Ericsson and now I was faced with various household gadgets bearing the , Krups and Rowenta brands.

Toaster and Kettle review

Published in Homes and Gardens by jzblue on June 10, 2008
Are you looking for a new toaster or kettle? With so many brands out there it can be very confusing so here is a simple guide to help you choose.
"Bread and water can so easily be toast and tea." Anonymous When I suggested to my colleagues at Gadgetspeak that we should look at toasters and kettles, I didn't realise quite how much toast I would have to eat, nor how much tea would be involved!! But we do like to be thorough for you, dear reader. A piece of toast is not just a piece of toast to the British.
Both these clocks come from a company whose message is ‘stuff you don’t need …. but you really really want.’ The first an analogue clock in three books and the second a cheeky digital offering.
Book Clock A very simple outline of three books each 6.5cm wide, 20cm tall and 14.5cm deep. So the total width is 19.5cm. The dummy books are black the one on the left has Nine in silver as the title and the one on the right has Three for the title. All three have the small Karlsson as the publisher near the base. The simple clock mechanism is fitted behind the centre book. It is powered by a single 'AA' battery.
Rechargeable batteries have huge advantages over their disposable counterparts, but you do need to be able to charge them!
Uniross are now a very well known brand both for NiMh batteries and for the chargers you need to keep them operating. The range of chargers available from Uniross itself can be fairly bewildering. In this review I'm looking at their latest fast charger. The charger is packaged with 4x2700mAh AA size batteries - the highest capacity we've seen available.

A neat and compact smoothie maker that comes complete with two travel jugs.
I've never met a Kenwood product I didn't like (not so far anyway).  The latest product we've tried is the Kenwood Smoothie 2Go. We've tried Kenwood smoothie makers before and this one is just as easy and effective to use.   So what is the difference?  Well mainly it's down to size and a few neat little features which make the smoothie easy to take out with you on picnics.

A Dyson Ball

Published in Homes and Gardens by mfereday on May 3, 2008
While hardly rating as one of my favourite tasks, it could be said that I have been having a ball recently when vacuuming my home.
The original computer mouse featured a ball that allowed it to be moved smoothly in any directly without the need for additional adjustments by the user.  Believing this same principle could be adapted for use with a vacuum cleaner, especially considering the trend towards smaller residents with the UK leading the rest of Europe in this respect, James Dyson and his tem of engineers set about designing a new vacuum, cleaner based on the ball principle.

Tefal Actifry

Published in Homes and Gardens by paul_smart on May 2, 2008
Can you imagine frying chips in less than a teaspoon of oil and getting lovely crisp chips? Well with the Tefal Actifry you can and you do.
I was to say the least sceptical deep fried chips to be crispy require double frying and that requires them to be cooked at a lower temperature and then recooked at a higher temperature to crisp them. So following the instructions I picked a medium sized potato which if it is 250 grams is stated to be a single portion. I weighed a few and found one at 260 grams. 13x13mm and up to 9cm long.

Tefal Toast N’ Egg

Published in Homes and Gardens by paul_smart on Apr 18, 2008
It looks like an almost conventional toaster but there is this Perspex area at one end. Yes while you cook your toast you can also poach your egg, it really does work, but please do not try this in your standard toaster.
It is 35x16x19cm. All the controls are on the front these consist of the normal vertical push arm to insert the toast and a horizontal slider to decide how dark you want your toast. To the right in a compass like arrangement are four push buttons. South is cancel, west is toast, north is toast and egg and east is egg. The power lead comes from under the unit it is a tab under one metre long and maybe it could be just that bit longer.
