POCO M5 Smart Mobile

This is the latest Smart Phone from a new company to me. POCO is the gaming arm of Xiaomi who I have reviewed phones from in the past. The M5 can switch refresh rates Video 30Hz or 60Hz, Gaming 60Hz or 90Hz and Scrolling at 30-60-90 Hz. Overall the cost of this POCO offing is not very much at all.

The POCO M5 smart phone measures 163x77x10mm in its supplied case that protects the back and sides, it weighs 222grams.

Going around the outside has the volume rocker and the on/off button on the right side. The base has speaker and microphone with the USB 'C' charge point in between, this can also be an OTG device. The left side has SIM entry point. The top has 3.5mm socket for headphones or earphones and a further microphone. The back has a slightly raised camera bar 5mm down from the top; this goes the whole width of the unit. This leaves the face with the forward facing selfie camera mounted centre top of the screen.

Once everything is setup the initial boot time is a disappointing 63 seconds while the shutdown is far better at only 3 seconds.

One very nice feature is that it has three modes to help protect your eyes DC Dimming, Sunlight Display and Reading Mode.

Next impressive factor is the 5000mAh battery which is stated to give close to 43 hours of calling, 22 hours of playback and over 15 hours of gaming. The battery supports fast charging at 18W.

All recent phones seem to be focusing of their cameras and here the main camera is 50MP and there are also 2MP depth and macro offerings as well as the LED flash. This gives you a choice of 1920x1080 or 1280x720 video recording both at 30FPS with both the front and rear cameras. The front camera is 5MP.

Should you remove the clear side and back shield you will find the phone has a leather texture back that is stain resistant and this would also help you hold it in wet weather.

Next plus feature is called DND mode that allows you to silence calls and notifications without turning off media. While on this subject the internal speaker is rather good.

A little thing I discovered that I have not seen before is the ability to change the position of the three 'Back' 'Home' 'Show All' to have ‘Show All’ on either left or right, of course you can also have full screen and use Gestures should you wish.

The phone is available in Black, Green or Yellow although mine was black to me it is closer to grey than black.

The processor is MediaTek Helio G99 which can run up to 2.2GHz.

There are three different storage versions 4GB RAM 64GB storage, 4GB RAM plus 128GB storage and 6GB RAM plus 128GB storage.

The display is 2408x1080 which is full HD and has 20:9 aspect ratio.

There is a side fingerprint reader and it can also support AI face unlocking. It has Bluetooth 5.3.

I only had one opportunity to take videos indoors at a gig during my short review period and the videos I got were rather good both images and the sound.

Now the point you have been waiting for the price. At the time of publication the 4GB RAM 128GB storage option is available from Amazon for £139.
