Emporia Smart.5

Image of author
Another recent offering from Emporia a company that produces phones that look normal while offering extra assistance for those of us over 65 who may or may not be retired. Early assistance phones tended to look rather different and while they offered the assistance needed some were reluctant to use them as they were embarrassed.

The Emporia Smart.5 measures 5x7.5x.8cm and weighs 174grams. The viewable screen is 12.4x6.2cm which gives the notional diagonal imperial measurement of 5½inches. The screen is 1440x720 pixels.

The Home screen is half an image of your choosing at the top and four larger buttons for the lower half, Phone, Email, Photos and Notifications. Swipe left and you get a further eight large icons these fill the screen in two columns of four. Camera, Calendar, Play Store, Email, Alarm, Weather, Internet and All Apps, this last icon will give an alphabetical list eight at a time. Apart from when you are at the Home screen the top right of the screen has a Back button taking you back one screen at a time, mostly there is also a Find icon to its left and this can sometimes get you to where you want quicker.

There are two soft cover books with the unit the smaller is an Installation Guide which gets even a total novice up and running. The larger is a 156 page Training Book, even for those who have used mobile phones for a while there are bound to be some nuggets of useful information.

All Emporia phones have an Emergency button on the back below the cameras, should you wish not to have this showing there is a second cover, in this unit there is also a third cover that is book type cover showing only the top half of the screen and you flip open the cover to access the rest of the screen.

The phone is compatible with M4/T4 hearing aids.

There are three cameras on the back in a 2cm square .5cm down from the top centre of the back the forth item is an LED flash. The main camera is 13MP. The face has an 8MP selfie camera.

There is 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM and among the supplied Apps is a QR Code reader and a magnifier function. For those whose sight is limited it also works with Google Assistant.

While this looks like a standard modern mobile phone it has the extra help available without it being glaringly obvious to any onlooker.

The Emporia Smart.5 is available from the first link below for 224.95 Euros which is currently around £198.46.
