While this may not be unique it is certainly something that I have not seen before. A set of headphones for a younger child – 3 upwards – that does not involve placing anything in the ear canal. So how do they perform I put them to the test.

click image to enlargeA seven centimetre wide fabric headband that is fifty four centimetres long, it is secured by Velcro pads on the inside of one end that can accommodate most children’s heads. The soft speakers can be moved within the folded piece of material to suit the area between the ears of the child.
The headband itself has a stitched image of the Gruffalos face with ears and horns protruding from the top of the headbands width.
A 1.2 metre long 3.5mm headphone lead emerges from the right side of the headband this can be attached to a phone or MP3 player. This means that parents do not need to listen to the music favoured by a young child be it tunes or even the background music of games.
As the Velcro that holds the headband is two 2.5cm round discs it will come undone if the child gets entangled in something so no chance of any harm coming to the child.
Sound quality is automatically lowered when headphones/headband are attached to a phone and not being in direct contact with the ear means even more protection to the child’s hearing.
The headband can be washed as the lead and soft speakers can be extracted. The total length of the lead from one speaker to the gold plated 3.5mm plug is 1.75metres.
The speakers are flat and 4.5cm across covered with a felt layer on each side.
So now onto the sound quality as always this is the hardest to answer, in my tests – as I am no longer a child – could not be conducted as a child would, the headband does just go round my head but only one speaker could be over a single ear as it was never designed for an adult. Sound was quite acceptable with a range of music both from my phone and an MP3 player.
I could with the cable and speakers extracted place the speakers over both ears and the stereo sound is correct.
Feeding the lead back in after washing is not that difficult as there are no obstructions in the centre of the headband.
