SUUNTO Wing Open Ear Bone Conduction Headphone

Recently I was introduced to Suunto, a leading company in the design and innovation involved in the production of sports watches, dive computers and digital services popular with adventurers.  The reason for the introduction was related to the company's launch of its Suunto Wing product.  Designed by athletes for athletes, the Suunto Wing is an open-ear bone conduction headphone product that can be used in different outside environments.

Rather than traditional headphones, which transmit acoustic vibrations through the air for their audio delivery, the Suunto Wing is based on a more innovative method of sound transmission.  The Wing sends its vibrations direct to the inner ear through the use of the listener's cheekbones thus by-passing the eardrum.  Suunto believes this change of direction can bring with it some additional benefits.  The wearer will be able to detection other important sounds encountered during outside activities such as a bicycle bell or an approaching vehicle.  With the reduction in pressure on the ear canal, the Wing can be worn comfortable for longer periods as the wearer goes about their usual business.

Featuring a three-button control option, the Wing allows for volume adjustment and input selection in the usual manner.  Head movement can also be used to activate music and accept incoming calls.  Weighing just 33 grams the Wing headphones can withstand temperatures ranging from -20º C up to 60º C plus being able to be submerged in one metre of water for 30 minutes.  With a one-hour of charging, the Suunto Wing should be able to provide 10 hours of use.

Constructed of titanium and silicone, the Suunto Wing product is available in Lava Red and Black with a price tag of £169.00 from Amazon or Suunto website.  As yet I have not had the opportunity to try out this product.
