HP PSC 1410

This is an All In One sometimes called a Multi Function Unit. It is an Inkjet Printer, Flatbed Scanner and a Colour Copier all in one very small package.

These devices are ideal for someone needing all three devices but not having the space for them all, in fact it probably takes up less space than most single units. It is 40x38x16cm with leads inserted. The weight is only a little over 4kilos so it is easy to move around.

Software installation will take a while but the supplied software works well. For the novice user the products supplied can do everything ‘Director’ is a much improved product and it can make all the decisions for you. For instance if you need to print an email attachment that needs to be signed and returned. It will print it, you sign it and place it on the flatbed, it then scans it once it knows it is to be emailed it will even place the created file in the email and you only need to fill in whom it is to be sent and place whatever text is required in the body of the email.

There are five printing modes and unlike a lot of other manufactures the HP ‘draft’ mode is quite black and readable, printing the nonsensical 200 word document it prints a respectable 16PPM and the more normal 1500 word offering spread over four pages it prints at 11PPM. The various other modes are of course slower but all timings are also done by manufacturers with ‘draft’ mode.

This is a four ink (two cartridge) printer and as such great full page photos are not it’s forte it can print borderless at 15x10cm but not A4. A quite acceptable full A4 image on plain paper takes around a minute while the same image printed on glossy paper and using best mode takes close to six minutes, the quality was acceptable but of course not as good as that from a dedicated six ink printer.

Standard copies can be carried out without the PC being on or even connected. A full A4 colour copy takes around 80seconds while the same in black takes only 25 seconds. Of course it you need dozens of copies then a standalone copier will be quicker. I placed the original and the copy side by side and only knew which was which by the fact I had placed a mark on the rear of original.

Scanning the occasional document can be handled with ease, even OCR can work quite well providing you give it a decent document to work with. Certain specialist scanners and expensive OCR products once ‘trained’ will give better results but that again is what you would pay for.

Given the choice I would prefer the HP PSC 1610 reviewed 22nd June but that earned the much coveted and rarely awarded 5x5 award. There is nothing wrong with this unit and for the money - 25% less than the HP PSC 1610 -, it works well.

This is small unit designed for people who need to print some, copy some and scan a bit and as such finding a unit as small and compact is hard, it does everything acceptably and if you are looking for an All In One place this on your list, further details from the HP site in the link at the end. Stated price is £49.99 including VAT from PC World

HP also sell direct, currently the PSC 1410 is available for £47+VAT, so a little more expensive.
