SIRO-A are back in the UK

I was lucky enough to see SIRO-A last year during their visit to the UK. This time they have lots of dates at the Leicester Square Theatre between now at the start of January 2015.

http://leicestersquaretheatre.ticketsolve.com/shows/873516548/events

Here is what I wrote about their visit in February 2013.

When I was sent an invite to the press night it very nearly went into the recycling, I do not like dance, I do not follow all the various TV programs extolling dance, so why then did I go and why was it such a great experience.

The technology used was the winner for me, the fact that it was a mix of live performers and almost impossible to tell the difference between them and projections. The LEDs their body suits were covered in the total lack of scenery except for some large cubes that were stacked in various precision ways and the whole accuracy of their placement on the stage.

It was a wonderful performance from one person doing the lighting and one the sound at the back of the stage but for me the most amazing thing was that the dancers were only four. See the show to see how just four could do everything they did.

There is a clip of the troupe in Japan and while the curtain bit that is the first part of it is clever the latter part is more of what you can see in the Leicester Square Theatre in London on various dates until the 22nd April 2013.

The amount of technology and training for those four performers – I do not call them dancers – was sheer skill. One word of warning the music was rather loud so if like me it was too loud you should bring earplugs with you. However even a non dance lover like me had a great time.

Adair Acoustic

For those who want quality audio you first need to listen to it, there are only a few places this can be done and most of those are tied to a single brand or brands. So it was quite a surprise to me to find an independent shop in central London.

It is not a shop in the conventional meaning of the word. It is on the second floor on the Clerkenwell Road quite near Old Street Tube. However I found it surprisingly quiet and easy to listen with the buses that passed being only a tiny noise.

It consists of a single very large room where a whole range of items from high quality headphones, speakers, DAB radios, LP decks and perhaps most important all the cables and other connections are available to link together.

As far as music is concerned they have a large range of CD’s, LP’s and perhaps more important higher quality music on a PC available to be played to find what parts will form what you require from a whole range of high quality manufacturers from around the world.

They are also quite happy for you to bring your own CD’s or audio files. You are able to select which units to match with which headphones or speakers.

Do not expect bargain basement prices, the equipment they sell is quality.

I have always been an audio fan and thoroughly enjoyed my visit, the staff were helpful and offered advice about what they considered might go with what.

A look at their website (link below) will give you an idea of what could be available at what sort of price.

They also do installations when required and while they are London based I asked the question and was told the home counties and even Bristol was within their work range for installations.

A lot of famous names were mentioned during conversations but I mention just three who are on one of their flyers so they must have approved it, Mark Knopfler from my day and two more recent names Will Young and a certain Harry Styles.

To give you an idea of single component prices DAB units from £179 to £600. Headphones from £50 to £2000. Speakers from ATC, £800 to £15000 and for those looking for an LP deck £200 to £1100.

Their website has details of most of the brands they cover and should you think it worth a visit ring or email first.

Harrods New Technology Department

This evening the launch of the brand new technology department in Harrods Knightsbridge store took place with lots of glitz and glamour.

All the well known high street names have sections as well as those normally only found in the more exclusive independent stores.

For those who know Harrods a good chunk of the third floor is now devoted to technology, part of the furniture department as well as the Waterstones bookshop have been amalgamated into technology making a huge department.

The world launch of Loewe new TV offering also took place, I hope to review this shortly. If you want to inspect a technology product then Harrods well informed staff are the people to ask. Also while you are there visit the Spy Store on one edge of the department and do not miss the wall of memorabilia opposite this area with lots of famous artefacts like a signed Muhammad Ali glove, lots of famous signatures worth a visit just to see this wall of wonders.

Asda offers britain’s lowest cost WebCam

A webcam that bears an uncanny similarity to Pixar robot favourite Wall-E goes on sale at Asda this week for an astonishing £2.93.

Britain’s cheapest webcam boasts a 300k pixel camera with built-in drivers and will attach to any PC or Mac via its USB cable.

Asda’s internet expert Gabbie Wise said: “This is an incredible deal for our connected customers and will help to put thousands of distant friends and family face to face.  Obviously at this price the picture resolution won’t be amazing, but one customer’s lack of resolution is another’s ‘cosmetic filter’”.

At £2.93, the Asda webcam is a fraction of the price of other webcams on the market, which can routinely sell for £50 or more.  Some professional webcams can sell for as much as £2,000, nearly 1,000 times the price of the Asda model.

The Asda webcam goes on sale this week in-store and online.

A review will follow once item is fully tested.

Skype is purchased by Microsoft

I count myself among the 633million users of Skype. I have used it more or less from the beginning. Perhaps the writing was on the wall when it was purchased for a lot of money a while ago by eBay. However this now seems to be a good deal - as far as eBay are concerned - as Microsoft have just spent $8.5 billion to buy it from them.

Nuromol, a new painkiller available only from Chemists

Nuromol is a mixture of Ibuprofen and Paracetamol but constructed in such a way that the ingredients that normally work at different speeds act together to give the same pain relief for longer.

With computers and their software if something does not work correctly most will be told RTFM (read the f… manual) here however the answer is RTFL (leaflet) as a large number of people continue taking painkillers without reading the leaflet supplied.

In a recent survey overall nearly a quarter of respondents did not know the difference between Paracetamol, Ibuprofen and Codeine. This rose to 37% of those in the age group of 18-24 year olds.

Medicine misuse is rife, 65% take painkillers for more than four days without seeking advice, over 30% take more than the recommended dose and perhaps most startling 29% do not read the on pack warnings let alone the leaflets inside.

Overall if you have pain that will not go away go and see your doctor or pharmacist. Numomal will not be available from corner shops or service stations just Chemists. The maximum number that should be taken in a day is six. Nuromol is available in packs of six, twelve, eighteen and twenty four and as stated only from your Chemist.
