The Latest Honor Offering

No sooner had I completed my review of the Honor 7X smartphone than Huawei announced the released of its Honor View 10 model. It was not too long before a unit was winging its way to me for the purpose of reviewing the product.

Available in a choice of colours including Midnight Black, Charm Red,, Beach Gold and the Navy Blue of my review sample, the Honor View 10 certainly has a stylish appearance with its glass front and aluminium body.  The side bezels are so narrow that they are almost non-existence and give on a reflective effect that can give you the impression that the handset is encircled by a metallic band.  This sleek body appearance comes with dimensions of 157 x 75 x 7 mm (H x DW x D) and weighs in at 196 g which does include the non-removable battery and a removable transparent back cover.  I found that this back cover managed to reduce the amount of slippage that could occur when not gripping the handset firmly when in use.

Dominating the front of this handset is a LTPS IPS LCD capacitive touch screen with multi-touch capabilities.  This screen delivers 16M colours at a resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels.  The size of this screen gives you a ~78.6% screen-to-body ratio with a 463 ppi density.  This Honor screen has somehow been created to combine clear images in various lighting conditions while reducing the amount of time I usually have to spend clearing away the finger smears that tend to inhabit the screen area often over a short period of time.  This clean screen aspect will surely keep my annoyance level reduced greatly.

The usual arrangement of controls and connection options, provided by Huawei, are positioned around the body of the Honor View 10.  Stationed on the right side of the handset is the volume rocker which is mounted above the power button.  A pinhole on the left side of the unit give access, using the supplied tool, to the pop out SIM tray that can hold dual nano SIMs or one nano SIM and a microSD card allowing you to increase the amount of storage space by 256GB.  Sockets for Type C reversible USB, with support for USB On-the-Go, plus a 3.5 mm jack socket, for use by headphones, and a speaker outlet are to be found across the base of the unit.  Positioned just below the screen is the front-mounted fingerprint reader.

Also featured at the front of the Honor View 10 is the secondary camera built into the unit.  This camera is a 13MP model designed for capturing Selfies and for use with Face Unlock facilities.  Situated on the rear of the handset, in the dual camera arrangement we have come to expect with offerings from Huawei.  In this case the pairing brings together a 16MP RGB camera with a 20MP monochrome unit.  With features that include phase detection autofocus, 2X lossless zoom, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus. Face / Smile detection and panorama capture, users should not be disappointed with the photographic results that are delivered.  Video capture is achieved at 2160p @ 30 fps.

The Honor View 10 is powered by a Hisilicon Kirin 970 chipset.  This Octa-core product is made up of 4 x 2.4 GHz Cortex-AT73 and 4 x 1.8GHz-A3 working in conjunction with the Mali-G72 MP12 GPU.  My review sample comes with an internal offering of 128GB of ROM and 6GB of RAM.  There is also a version of the product with 64GB of ROM with either 4 or 6GB of RAM.  As mentioned earlier, the battery is non-removable.  This Li=Po 3750 mAh battery comes with the promise of delivering up to 528 hours on standby on 3G with a talk time of up to 23 hours on 3G.  A fast charge facility allows for a 58% capacity in 30 minutes.  Running my usual non-stop video playing procedure, with the videos being streamed via USB TGO, I started to get low battery level warnings after 8 hours 23 minutes.

Firing up the Honor View 10, from cold following a shutdown, takes around 26 seconds leading to the Android operating system overlaid with Honor’s EMUI 8 user interface.  The Honor View 10 comes with version 8.0 (Oreo) of Android.  Along with the ability to switch to the tile-based Simple Mode, you can customise the more typical look and feel to suit your particular needs.

This Honor View 10 handset comes with a range of features.  I have already mentioned the front-mounted fingerprint reader, which adds a layer of protection, and this is accompanied by accelerometer, gyro, proximity and compass sensors.  There is also support for WLAN WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual=band WiFi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2, A2DP, aptx HD, LE, GPS and NFC.  Along with a HTMLS browser, you get DivX/XviD/MP4/H.265/WMV player, MP3/eAAC+/WMA/WAV player and editors for documents, photos and videos.

As you might expect from the design and feature list, the Honor View 10 is not considered a budget type smartphone.  It may not be priced alongside the eye-watering prices of certain top range offerings but it will cost more than the recent bill I received for my next year’s water bill – even after the massive repair work being undertaken following the recent bad weather.  Amazon is currently listing the Honor View 10 at £423.54.
