Designed by Moshi, a company founded in 2005 to create simple, sophisticated accessories for users of mobile devices, the IonSlim 5K is a portable power bank product.  Extremely simple in appearance, with a touch of style, the IonSlim 5K is an ultra slim slab encased within an anodized aluminium body that can be used to extend the life of a mobile phone when you are out and about with no access to a convenient mains power source.

The unit has dimensions of 130 x 70 x 8.5 mm and weighs 138g which means the IonSlim 5K should not cause too much inconvenience with regards to the adding of the weight being carried or cause an unsightly bulge when storing the device in a pocket.  Apart from the Moshi logo decorate the front face of the device, both faces of the IonSlim 5K are free from any distraction.  Black strips run along the top and bottom of the IonSlim 5K’s body.

Located along the base of the IonSlim 5K device are two USB ports.  They are of different formats that can be used for the charging purposes of either attached mobile devices or the unit’s internal Lithium polymer battery.  One of the USB ports is of the Type-A format while the other USB port is of the newer Type-C format.  While Type-A USB ports regularly make an appearance on power banks, this is the first time I have come across a Type-C port, that allows the connecting lead to be inserted either way up, on such a device.

The USB Type-C port serves a dual purpose with the IonSlim 5K  It can be used when recharging the IonSlim 5K’s internal Lithium polymer battery and to charge any USB Type=C device that needs to be connected to the Moshi power bank.  The standard USB Type-A port is available for when charging iOS offerings and other devices;  For connection purposes you are supplied with a short USB Type-A to Type-C lead measuring 10 cm.

Along with the two USB ports, the base of the IonSlim 5K house a small circular, silver button that sits almost flush to the body of the unit.  On pressing this button, up to four pin print LED lights, arranged along the base, will glow white to indicate the current state of the available capacity of the internal Lithium polymer battery.  Four lights  indicate a battery available capacity of between 75 and 100%; three lights show a level of 50 and 75%; two lights appear when capacity is between 25 and 50%; while a single light occurs when you have less than 25% left of the batteries full capacity of 5150 mAh.  In the case of a single light glowing then you should consider recharging the IonSlim 5K.

When using the IonSlim 5K to either charge another device or undergoing its own recharging process, you just need to make the appropriate connection.  No additional action is required as the power is transferred from the source to the destination automatically.  The actual amount of charging available from the IonSlim 5K will depend upon the devices being charged.

For instance Moshi has rated the IonSlim 5K as being capable of recharging an iPhone to a full battery level twice.  However I was only able to fully charge up my Huawei Mate 9 unit just once.  With other mobile phones, you will probably get different results.

The IonSlim 5K offers the ability to charge a range of different device while not weighing you down too much.  When Moshi originally launched this product in America, it was priced at $50 and this was converted to £49.95 for the UK market.  You can save 40 pence by purchasing this power bank from Amazon.co.uk who has priced the product at £49.58.
