Philips 27inch Gioco

A slim and light panel from Philips, it is capable of 1920x1080 and the unit has a good range of forward and backward movement available on its base. There is no side to side movement but as its light its easy to move around.

The 27inch Philips Gioco monitor measures 62x37x2.5cm, the stand is 31x20cm. It raises the unit by 10cm from your desk. There is around 15% of back movement and around half that in forward movement. As the unit is light – but well balanced – moving it to the sides is easy. However as you can view it from close to being beside it little movement should be required.

The viewable screen is 60x33.5cm and the diagonal imperial measurement is 27inches.

The controls are five touch buttons at the right side of the base of the screen. Just above them on the screen front are descriptions of what each button does. There is a single pin hole LED which shows white when the unit is on.

The first button has a range of Gamer settings, the second is ambiglow brightness, the third can show 2D, 3D, or various screen portions in break up sizes, the forth shows the main display screen, while the fifth is the on/off button.

In practice the only button you are likely to need in everyday use is the on/off one. Perhaps the ambiglow needs some explanation it is two columns of four lights that throw light back from behind the screen an interesting effect. This is designed to create a halo of light behind to make the screen to enhance the vision of the screen.

The connections at the rear are in a single block towards the centre, starting with the DC input, two HDMI then VGA and a further HDMI, next the USB hub input and then two columns of two USB3 ports the lower one on the second column remains live even when the panel is off to charge other devices providing the unit still has power connected.

There is an eight sides of A5 sheet which covers everything from connecting the base, deciding how to connect via HDMI or D-Sub (VGA) and then three sides to go through the on screen controls I have already outlined.

While most modern PCs will work without having to add any drivers it is worth having the correct setup and the supplied CD will provide this, it also has a 3D driver should you wish to play a range of 3D games. There is also a full User Manual in PDF format as well as Philips Smart Control software that allows you to split the screen into various parts which is great should you wish to track the progress of several tasks at the same time.

The screen does seem to blend into the sides and top as there are no raised edges apart from the base that is slightly proud.

Even if you decide to connect using D-Sub (VGA) you can easily also connect a DVD or Blu-ray player via the HDMI in port.

Perhaps the most interesting feature is the SmartImage technology that works to give the best brightness, contrast and colour saturation for any given use. It works so well that you almost forget its there until you look at some other panels.

SmartTxt is something that sharpens the contrast for those times you are reading documents to help avoid eyestrain and it seems to work.

This is a very nice large unit my only moan is why can it not display screens greater than 1920x1080 as it is not cheap.

The Philips Gioco is available from the link below for £397.60 including delivery.
