Bookshelf Speakers

Seeing the courier struggle up to my front door was enough to give my back a panic attack at the thought of this next review.

As a specialist in the production and manufacture of premium audio solutions with innovative design concepts, Edifier has a portfolio consisting of a wide range of speakers developed to fulfil different user needs and budget constraints.  Currently the company has speakers that could be classified as Bluetooth, Desktop, Cinesound, Wireless, Portable, Bookshelf and Speakerphone.  The latest example of an Edifier product to arrive for review is the S1000DB Multimedia speaker model which belongs to the Bookshelf category.

This kit is based around a pair of bookshelf speakers with attractive wood side panels, a matte black finish and front grilles.  Also included in the box are a small remote control unit plus a selection of leads.  These leads include dual RCA to dual RCA, 3.5 mm jack plug to dual RCA, fibre optic input and a speaker connecting cable.

One speaker is designated as passive with the other as active.  The speakers feature a titanium dome tweeter and a rear bass reflex port.  Both speakers have dimensions of 34 x 20 x 28 cm.  The speakers have been created with an angled design so as to produce a larger sound with a lower frequency.  Rubberised feet on the base of the speakers should help ensure that slippage should not be a problem with positioning.

As you would expect, the active speaker houses the greater majority of the connection options plus the available controls.  Apart from the infrared receiver which is mounted on the front of the unit, the active speaker positions its various options on the rear of the speaker.  There are volume dials for master, treble and bass plus input ports for coaxial, line in and optical with a connection socket for linking to the passive speaker.  A mains power socket and on / off switch complete the complement for this speaker product that can accept input from PC, AUX, optical, coaxial and Bluetooth.  The sole connection option of the passive speaker is for linking it to the active partner.

Providing the means for controlling this speaker set up, from a distance, is the remote control unit.  This facility is powered by a CR2025 button style battery.  The remote control allows you to adjust and mute the volume level, turn standby on plus switch between coaxial / optical and AUX / PC modes.  There is also a Bluetooth mode option.

Rather than assign priority, as happens with some audio systems I have looked at, to a particular mode when various connections have been established, this task is left under the user’s control.  Pressing the Master volume dial on the active speaker or the appropriate key on the remote unit will allow the user to select the chosen source of the incoming audio to suit their listening pleasure.

I encountered no problems with regards to the positioning of the speakers nor when connecting to various input sources using the supplied leads.  Bluetooth aptx connectivity gives you the usual 10 metres of distance between the delivery source and the speaker destination.  I was more than happy to listen to the audio quality of my middle-of-the-road music collection plus a number of video movies with the S1000DB speaker set up providing the output.
