Bluetooth Headphones

With its expertise in developing speakers, it is not surprising Edifier also develops headphones.

Previously, whenever the name of Edifier popped up, as it does on numerous occasions, the subject matter would concern a speaker system offering a range of audio features and sometimes unusual shapes.  However, with the arrival of the latest Edifier product, I will now need to widen my view of the company’s product portfolio.  I had been sent an Edifier W800BT unit.  The W800BT product is a Stereo Bluetooth set of headphones with AUX connectivity.

Classified as over-the-ear headphones, although I would tend to place them in the on-the-ear type of device, these headphones are available in a choice of black, red or while with my review sample being of the latter hue.  Included in the box, packaged in a cardboard envelope, are a standard-to-micro USB lead for charging the lithium-ion battery plus a lengthy 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm audio lead for use when streaming audio from a device that does not support Bluetooth streaming.  You also get a multi-lingual Getting Started booklet.

The W800BT headphones have been designed as an all-in-one device with rather minimal adjustments for a more comfortable fit on various head sizes and shapes.  You can extend the headband at each end by as much as 36 mm to give a total spread of 30 cm as the only adjustment available for a more comfortable placement on the head.  Both the headband and pair of ear cups are well padded, with soft leather on the ear cups, for a more comfortable fit when indulging in lengthy private listening sessions.  Despite the limited adjustment features, I  found that these headphones were a comfortable fit.

Tucked away, just before the headband reaches the ear cups are the familiar “L” and “R” indicators to help ensure you place the headphones the correct way round to ensure a better experience of the audio and  a more comfortable fit.  Situated on the base of the left ear cup is a 3.5 mm jack socket that can be used, in partnership with the supplied audio cable, to link the headphones to a device that does not support Bluetooth streaming.

Located on the right ear cup are volume adjustment up and down controls with plus and minus indicators to avoid any confusion,  Next to these button is a built-in microphone that comes into its own when you need to respond to an incoming phone call from an attached smartphone that interrupts your enjoyment of the music.  On the outside of the right ear cup is a mode indicator and multi-function button which includes on/off power capability and Bluetooth streaming within its feature set.  The right ear cup also houses the USB port for charging the lithium-ion battery.  A red light will flash during the charging process and stop when the battery is fully charged.

Switching from Bluetooth to non Bluetooth delivery is just a matter of inserting the supplied lead into the socket on the left ear cup.  This will automatically disconnect the Bluetooth stream and replace it with the stream from the audio lead.  The Bluetooth connection will need to be re-established once the audio lead is removed.  In either case, audio quality is of a reasonable standard delivered by the headphones 40 mm driver.

The lithium-ion battery built into the W800BT headphones promises up to 75 hours of playback and 800 hours on standby and I have no reason to disbelieve either figure.  Expect to pay in the region of £31 for this pleasant looking Stereo Bluetooth headphones for providing the user with private listening capabilities.
