Bose SoundTouch System

Published in Entertainment on 1 Feb 2018
A range of wireless, networked speakers that can talk to each other and to your other network enabled devices to create a multi-room synchronised sound space.
The main range comprises three speakers and an 'adaptor' that will allow a legacy speaker to become part of the network. There are also additional ancillary products available such as a soundbar and a system with a built in CD player (The Wave SoundTouch Music System IV). This review is focussed on the core speakers. The SoundTouch 10 is a small monophonic speaker idea for a kitchen.

JVC UX-D100 Hi-Fi System

Published in Entertainment on 18 Jan 2018
I thought it would be good to take a longer term look at a few products, some of which will no longer be on the market but that will give an insight into the quality and concerns of different manufacturers. First up is this JVC mini hifi.
After a couple of years getting by with an ad-hoc combination comprising various wireless Bluetooth speakers I was sorely missing a 'hifi' box with good speakers and quality sound. After shopping around I settled on this product from JVC. I can't say the decision was very informed.

Huawei TalkBand B1

Published in Health and Beauty on 13 Mar 2015
The Talkband is a hybrid device incorporating a bluetooth headset and a basic activity monitor. So how good is at these two distinct functions?
This is my first real experience with and so I was quite curious to see what benefits this new category could provide. First of all let me descirbe the device to you. From the image you can see a reasonably marrow strap, one side of which is quite chunky. The chunky side shows a glossy black display which when switched on shows a blue-tinted OLED display.

SmartBox 8320HD

Published in Entertainment on 1 Dec 2010
It's a while since I've looked at a hard-disk video recorder so I was eager to see what innovations the SmartBox 8320HD could bring to our family entertainment.
First of all the basics. The product name, "SmartBox 8320 ", should be the first clue that this is one of the recent FreeView HD receivers. It includes two independent tuners allowing various combinations or watching and recording different channels.

Dremel Trio

Published in Homes and Gardens on 27 Nov 2010
Known for their small precision craft drills Dremel have now introduced the Trio - similar is styling to a small hand-held router or electric jigsaw this versatile tool will cut, rout and sand.
For those familiar with a standard DIY plunge-router the Dremel Trio will look very familiar. Rather than the usual two post sprung pillars Dremel have gone for a single unsprung post. This is intended to be used to set the depth of cut before use. Once the depth is selected a screw holds the post in the desired position. Power is provided by a 200W motor with a variable speed control allowing you to select anything from 10,000 RPM through to 20,000 RPM. The colette accepts 4.
I'm sitting in my living room listening to 2Day FM - my daughters favourite Austrailian radio station. Welcom to Internet Radio!
Now that's a long way for your average radio signal to reach - unless you're on Long Wave, in which case the audio will be awful. I'm not and it's not. I'm listening to an excellent quality broadcast that could be transmitted from just down the road. I am of course listening across the Internet. While my daughter discovered 2Day FM by listening using her laptop I have the luxury of listening using a 'real radio'. In this case the Roberts Stream 205.
It's about a year since I last looked at a digital photo frame. The latest incarnation from Kodak has a number of excellent innovations that make loading your images that much easier and at the same time provide a marked improvement in the screen.
While a year or so ago a 7" screen was often the norm and a premium would get you an extra inch the Kodak Pulse provides a bright clear 10" LED backlit display. The screen is bordered by a modest black surround about an inch deep. The device includes an integral stand holding the display at about 85°. All configuration of the device is accomplished through the touch-sensitive screen - resulting in an almost button free product.

WAHL Deluxe Gift Set

Published in Health and Beauty on 23 Nov 2010
Christmas is on the way - and if you need a gift idea for a man in your life then you might want to take a look at the WAHL Deluxe Gift Set. That is if the man in question takes his grooming seriously!
While I'm not an expert it would seem this set has everything one would need to keep their hair, and beard, in check. On the 'manual' side there is a comb and a pair of hairdresser scissors suitable for trimming an errant fringe. The main interest though will be the three electrical appliances. Smallest in the collection and the only one I felt qualified to try in anger is a nasal trimmer.

Xsight Touch Remote Control

Published in Entertainment on 12 Nov 2010
For some years there has been a growing market for replacement remote controls for audio-visual products - usually cramming the functions of many separate devices into one easy to use replacement. The Xsight Touch Remote Control from "One-for-All" is the ultimate example of this genre.
The unit has a very good, quality feel to it with a good weight. The lower two-thirds resemble a standard remote controlwith function and navigation buttons. The top third contains a touch-sensitive LCD touch screen. While most remotes will happily work for months or even several years on a couple of AAA cells a device with touch screen is going to need more umpth. Recognising this the Xsigh Touch comes with a long-life Li-Ion battery.
Although there have been bearded times in my life, like many men shaving is an integral part of my daily routine so I'm always keen to try the latest technology in this area!
The Braun Series 7, 790cc is the latest in their Series 7 range and is of the foil style. To do justice to any shaver review one has to use the product for more than the occasional shave - each shaver is unique and you have to adapt to it's particular style. For the purposes of this review I've been using the 790cc for just over two weeks.

Devolo DLAN 200 AVsmart+

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 7 Sep 2010
I've been a convert to HomePlug networking for quite some time now - it wins over Wireless in so many ways. Devolo have recently introduced a new range of adaptors adding some useful features.
For those that don't know, HomePlug is a way of creating a network in your home (or small office). The is the latest adaptor from Devolo and supports the faster 200Mbps data rate of the HomePlug AV standard. You can . To recap , rather than string long pieces of wire around the place HomePlug instead sends the data over your mains electricity cables.

AVerTV Volar HD Pro

Published in Entertainment on 13 Aug 2010
Although not a particular TV addict there are times when it's good to be able to tune in. This natty little USB receiver from AVerMedia allows you to so do while on the move.
The AVerMedia Volar HD Pro is the size of a traditional USB memory stick. One end has a standard USB plug while the other has a standard TV aerial socket. Included with the receiver are a small dual rod antenna, remote control, quick installation guide and CD containing the tuner and video recording software (PVR). Signal strength in our area isn't great however I have to report very little success with the built in aerial.

3M MPro150 business pocket projector

Published in Misc on 27 Apr 2010
For those of you that were introduced to corporate presentations in the form of acetate slides and permanent markers things have come a long way.
Am I showing my age? Many were the important presentations where I lovingly drew multi-colour slides with charts and text ready to slip onto an overhead projector. That projector in itself was an innovation - as is this new little marvel from 3M the MPro 150. Acetate was seen off in the corporate field with the advent of laptops and then with bulky projectors that would plug directly into the VGA port.
At a loss for what to get the kids for Christmas? Bewildered by the array of boxes on the shelves of the local toy shop? Help is at hand!

Roxio Creator 2010

Published in Software on 2 Dec 2009
The most recent incarnation of Roxio's highly functional multi-media authoring package
For the purpose of this review I've installed Roxio on my fairly new 'average' laptop - this machine is by no means top of the range and is probably one of the lowest spec machines on which I'd expect to sensibly edit video : Intel Core2 Duo with 4GB RAM. Installation was particularly slow - but as long as you're patient it will get there in the end. The total installation takes around 1.6GB of disk space.

Kingston MobileLite G2

A put-in-your pocket memory card reader from the memory specialist Kingston that supports SD and Memory Stick formats.
While a good number of computers these days do come with built-in memory card readers this is by far from being universally the case. Here in the office my year old desktop machine for instance has no such card reader. While it's still common to see 17-in-1 card readers available, the industry has thankfully, for the most part, standardised on a couple of card formats, although with variations.

Snuggie - the blanket with sleeves

Published in Misc on 2 Dec 2009
Snuggies are an ideal solution to some of the colder aspects of the British winter.
While not, strictly speaking, a gadget they can certainly be thought of as a gadget accessory although they will be a useful addition to many sedentary activities. A Snuggie can be thought of as a practical blanket. Your traditional blanket is just fine for keeping you warm in bed but has severe limitations if you want to do anything - like read. Or for that matter sit at a desk and... errrr... well write an article.

Verbatim Audio Cube

Published in Entertainment on 1 Dec 2009
Verbatim take advantage of bluetooth media players to ditch the wires!
Wires? Not needed - simply hook up the Verbatim Audio Cube to your favourite Bluetooth equiped media player and you're away! Bluetooth has migrated from the mobile phone to the media player, although in many cases it is in fact the media player that has migrated to the phone! Either way some very good quality, high capacity media players now come equipped with Bluetooth (with of course the notable exception of the iPod range - come on Apple - catch up!).

Nio Bluetooth Security Tag

Published in Wireless on 1 Dec 2009
With the proliferation of small valuable gadgets you don't have to be of a nervous disposition to worry that they may be liberated from you!
The Nio is a Bluetooth solution to put your mind at ease - being presented as you Gadget Guardian! With miniaturisation comes huge benefits of course. Not so long ago your mobile phone was the size of a brick, your 'laptop' required reinforced thighs and your reel-to-reel tape deck wasn't going anywhere. You didn't have to worry too much about someone wandering off with your valuables while you were out and about simply because those valuables weren't with you. Technology moves on.

Vlingo - speech recognition to go

Published in Misc on 1 Dec 2009
Speech recognition on mobiles hasn't moved beyond answering the odd call - Vlingo aim to improve matters!
One of my favourite moments in film history is Star Trek's Scottie, travelling back in time, sternly calling “Computer............ Computer...................” at a 20th century computer screen. Getting no response he believes the computer to be broken. Well we all know that technology has brought us voice recognition applications on computers and now Vlingo are making this part of our daily lives with their mobile voice recognition sotrware.

Duracell InstantCharger

Published in Misc on 23 Oct 2009
Recharging an array of gadgets while on your travels has always been a problem - Duracell have a solution thanks to USB
Until very recently of your gadgets will have required their own personal charger, complete with proprietary connector. Travelling with your mobile phone, camera and MP3 player could easily mean three separate mains chargers eating up your luggage space. USB (Universal Serial Bus) was developed as an inexpensive common interconnect system for computers allowing devices as disparate as keyboards, DVD drives and GPS navigation systems to share an interface a connector.
A useful hobby and enthusiast tool that counts amongst it's abilities carving, engraving, sharpening, cleaning, cutting and sanding.
The Dremel Series 300 Multitool is very much like a small hand-held mains powered drill (in fact one of the jobs it can do is drill). The core unit takes a wide range of different tools, attachments and accessories. The review unit is packaged for Dremel's "Hobby" line and comes complete with twenty five different tools for a number of tasks.

LinkSys Media Hub NMH405

Published in Laptops/PCs/Apple on 17 Sep 2009
This natty device aims to provide your home computers with safe storage for important documents and a central store for shared media files.
I've reviewed a number of home network attach storage (NAS) products over the last couple of years that have promised much and delivered rather less. The Media Hub from Linksys, a division of networking giant Cisco, has focussed on delivering a robust, reliable product with a good core feature set. The focus is on simplicity and ease of use - a product that sits there quietly in the corner looking after your data! The Media Hub measures 11.1 x 19.8 x 16.8 cm (WxHxD).

LG HT32S Home Cinema System

Published in Entertainment on 14 Sep 2009
Although billed as a home cinema system this cool looking product from LG offers a range of multimedia functions.
The HT32S comprises a main system box, a large bass sub-woofer and two satellite tweeters. The main speaker measures a substantial 216x405x310mm (WxHxD) and weights a hefty 5.9Kg. The satelite speakers measure 118x230x115mm and weight 1.1Kg each. Power output is 150W from the subwoofer and 75W from each of the satellites. The design is very sleek with a curved main unit and side speakers. Accompanying the system is a comprehensive remote control.
Jabra have made their name making quality Bluetooth headsets for the mobile phone market. That market has moved on and so has Jabra, here with their latest Jabra Halo stereo headset.
Very few mobile phones are in fact simply mobile phones these days. Technological progress has lead to that phone in your pocket shrinking in size while vastly expanding functionality. High on the list of roles is that of media player - both for audio and more recently for video. The traditional Bluetooth headset, while suitable for making a phone call, is obviously not up to the task of stereo playback of your favourite music.

TwistJax from Atomic Floyd

Published in Entertainment on 28 Aug 2009
Our ears are as individual as the rest of us and with TwistJax Atomic Floyd aims to provide a perfect fit for all, combined of course with superb sound.
This is the second set of headphones from Atomic Floyd that I've reviewed, the previous being the . The TwistJax shares many characteristics with it's earlier stable-mate - notably a high quality finish, excellent sound quality and durable design. Each earpiece is solidly manufactured in metal with no external plastic elements. The drum connects to the cable via a metal shaft that is designed to align comfortably with your particular shape of ear.

The Ricoh CX1 measures approximately 102x58x28mm (WxHxD), almost identical to it's stable mate the . The dimensions are not the only similarity with that model and the CX1 can in many ways be seen as a logical successor.

Sony Ericsson C510 mobile phone

Published in Phones on 4 Aug 2009
A new candy-bar mobile from Sony Ericsson that provides a wealth of features in a small package at a good price.
The Sony Ericsson C510 measures approximately 47x107x12mm (WxHxD) and weighs 92g. For the fashion conscious you can have your choice of red, silver or black. The device is very reminiscent of my , although with the addition of a few new features and a loss of around 30% of thickness. In the box with the phone Sony Ericsson provide their standard charger, USB cable, stereo headset, manual and CD.
I've mentioned in previous reviews how one of the most important elements required for good sound is often neglected my media player manufacturers. In this case I review some headphones that not only address the sound quality but also aesthetics.
A number of manufacturers have recognised the opportunity to improve on the audio performance of the standard headphones shipped with most media players. Atomic Floyd have taken this a stage further and recognised that good audio is a necessary requirement, but in these fashion conscious days is not sufficient in and of itself. Portable media players are all about that - being portable, listening on the move and for many people 'on the move' can include moderate exercise.

Published in Entertainment on 12 Jan 2009
I've reviewed a number of iPod docking stations over the last couple of years. This one has an extra twist to take account of the latest range of video capable iPods.
Technology has marched on allowing Apple to evolve the iPod. From the first generation through to the latest the iPod has progressed from simple music player to a capable multi-media player. While many of the latest iPods are video capable this facility is most evident on the iPod Touch, the new iPod Nano and, of course, the iPhone.
