Trimming Facial Hair

Looking for a present for a male partner then maube this next product will appeal.

With the promise of providing 25 different length settings, the BT5050 is a new addition to the Braun range of facial hair maintenance products.  This beard trimmer kit consists of the main hand-held trimmer unit plus a couple of detachable heads for use with precise and wide trimming tasks when tiding up facial hair.  You also get a small cleaning brush, a mini bottle of application oil, draw-string soft travel pouch, two-pin power lead and multi-language User Guide.  The BT5050 comes with a claim of automatically adapting to any voltage between 100V and 240V.  As yet I have not had the opportunity to test this particular feature.

The product’s packaging does mention that two rechargeable batteries are included with the product.  This might, as I originally thought, could give the impression that the battery was replaceable and thiswould give the user the failsafe option of having a ready charged replacement if the need ever occurred.  However the reference to the batteries was just an indication that a pair of rechargeable, but not replaceable, batteries comes pre-installed within the device giving the user both cord and cordless beard trimming facilities.

A full charging of these batteries, taking up to eight hours, will give the user 50 minutes of cordless performance while a quick five minute charge should suffice for one trim.  Braun does recommend that the batteries are fully discharged, under normal operational conditions, every six months or so before undertaking a full recharge.  An LED light provides feedback regarding low battery status and the recharging process.

With an occasional blue highlight to indicate release, lock and power functions, the BI5050 is predominately black in colour.  Shaped like many similar facial trimming devices, this beard trimmer has dimensions of 160 x 125 mm (length and circumference).  It certainly felt a comfortable fit in my small hand while being used.  The power button was positioned ideally for access by my thumb for turning power on and off

Switching between the two supplied different heads is just a matter of depressing the two side-mounted release buttons (coloured blue) and sliding the head unit upwards.  Each of the two heads has its own method of adjusting the length of the applied trim.  The precise trimmer, offering defined lines and edges for precise contouring of the facial hair, features a circular control panel that allows for a possible length setting of 1 – 10 mm in 0.5 mm steps.  A lock switch is available to fix the desired length to whatever length you choose.

Rather than the circular control option, the wide trimmer head gives the user a side-mounted slider control.  This allows for the length to be adjusted between 10 and 20 mm in five steps.  This trimmer is for use when tackling large areas of facial hair such as sideburns and moustaches.  No lock feature is available for use with the wide trimmer.

As mentioned earlier, you are supplied with a small brush for generally cleaning purposes.  However you also have the option for cleaning the BT5050 with water.  Just hold the trimmer under a running tap and then leave the trimmer to dry.

The Braun BT5050 performed well during the review process.  As already mentioned the trimmer felt comfortable in my hand and performed its various tasks without any problems.  There were no problems when switching between the two heads and keeping the device clean was a simple operation.

Made in China and featuring German engineering, the Braun BT5050 comes with a two year warrantry that commences on the date of purchase.  The beard trimmer’s sharp blades are meant to last a lifetime – I’m guessing the lifetime refers to that of the trimmer unit and not that of the purchased.  Braun has priced this device at £49.99 but my shopping around you could find it cheaper.  Currently it is listed on Amazon.co.uk at £41.18.
