Somfy Protect Indoor Camera

This indoor camera is shaped like a wheel and has a slightly magnetic base so it stays where you put it. Like most such items it is controlled by an App. The setup is therefore almost entirely on your phone. Place the camera and insert the long micro USB lead and answer a number of questions on the phones screen and then you have a working security camera.

This indoor security camera from Somfy measures 9x9x4cm without the small curved base it sits on.

The box it comes in has three layers first the camera, then after removing the top layer the three metre (10 foot) micro USB to USB lead and on the final layer dual EU and UK plugs with USB front.

Plug in the plug to a power outlet attach the full sized USB end to the plug front and then anywhere within three metres place the camera and plug the micro USB end of the lead into the rear of the camera.

There is a card in English to explain all this, after that everything is via the App.

This took around five minutes and then it tells you that an update is required, this seemed to take around ten minutes to complete so go and make a coffee or it will seem even longer. Leave your phone near the camera so it can link the Wi-Fi and the camera.

There is a privacy shutter on the front of the camera that automatically shuts while the update takes place; this reopens when it is completed as well as your phone saying the update is completed.

Unlike some cameras the instruction card in the box gives full details of all the lights etc on the camera.

There are also cards should you be from Germany, France Netherlands or Italy. So often today all you get is a range of not that clear illustrations to try to explain everything, so well done Somfy.

On the face of the camera are a vertical line of four IR-low light sensor, full HD lens with 130 degree viewing angle, motion sensor and Ambient Light Sensor. Also on the front are status LED and microphone. On the rear is speaker, micro USB port and reset button.

If an intruder is spotted you are sent a message and a thirty second video is available for seven days and any secondary number you listed such as a neighbour or nearby friend is notified and a 90dB siren is activated so unless you live miles from anywhere the intruder should be scared off. There are other accessories such as smoke detectors are mentioned on the Somfy site but I have not seen these.

Now onto the privacy shutter the one item I am uneasy about, if you are the owner you only need to deactivate the camera on your phone, if you have teenage children they might like it but would you?

At the time of publication the Somfy Protect Indoor Camera is available from Amazon for £119 including free delivery.
