Pure-Fi Anywhere

Adding to the range of iPod accessories, not developed by Apple, is a new speaker and recharging unit from Logitech.

The influence of the iPod phenomena continues to spread.  The latest example of this trend to come my way is the Pure-Fi Anywhere product.  Developed by Logitech, this product is a one-piece, portable speaker set with a centrally positioned docking station for the ubiquitous iPod.

The Pure-Fi Anywhere product consists of the speaker/docking unit; a wireless remote control; a protective, rigid travel case; adapters for various iPod devices; and a power lead with a choice of 2 or 3-pin plug.  Measuring 337 x 93 x 40mm, the speaker/docking unit is predominately black in colour.  There is a matt silver band running around the unit and this holds touch sensitive controls that are found on the top right of the unit.

With its built-in rechargeable battery, the Pure-Fi Anywhere can provide up to 10 hours of stereo output from your iPod or other type of music player.  The iPod can be docked in the centrally mounted compartment.  In this position the iPod can provide the audio content with volume, stop/pause and track selection under the control of either the supplied remote or the speaker own control buttons.  The iPod can also be recharged using the Pure-Fi Anywhere device.

Other types of music players are able to be connected via the 3.5mm auxiliary socket found at the rear of the device.  However you will need to provide the connecting lead as Logitech has opted not to include one in the box.  Devices connected by this method will miss out on both the recharging and remote control facilities enjoyed by the iPod.

The Pure-Fi Anywhere speakers make use of a set of 5.1cm Max-X active, high-excursion drivers in combination with 7.6cm pressure drivers and StereoXL technology in attempting to achieve quality audio output.  While I found that the quality of audio was fine for both iPod and other music player content, there was a difference with regards the volume level achieved by the various types of devices.  Using an iPod in the docking compartment produced a volume level that would be suitable for group listening.  However the volume level achieved using the auxiliary input socket was disappointing even when the volume level of the speakers and music players were set at their highest level.

The Pure-Fi Anywhere product is fine when used with its targeted iPod range.  There is support for the iPod classic, Nano, touch, mini and video models.  You also get the recharging facility and ability to control the iPod via the supplied remote.  The travel case can store all the various items, held firm by restraining straps, although perhaps a carrying handle would have been a useful addition.  However for those looking for a product to use with non-iPod device, the product is less impressive especially when you know that this product has been priced at £99.99.
