Going to the Planetarium is an expensive experience, buying a telescope is also expensive, looking at the stars with a naked eye requires a clear night – that probably means a cold night – you also need to be clear of light pollution. This product works indoors whenever you want.

First you need to download the Universe2Go App from the Android Store and start the App.

Setting it up to work with your phone will take a while as your phone needs to fit inside the frame. When you get it this is covered by several pieces of foam to cover the whole area if you are using say a 5inch SmartPhone most will need to be removed piece by piece and probably just leave one thin strip to hold your phone in place.

Next you need to enter the code stuck to the inside of the box to activate your copy of Universe2Go.

Having removed the correct amount of foam filling your phone should fit neatly in the stereo viewer and you should be able to click the outer door shut.

Now the fun starts as you need to control the App with your head movements on first use a ball appears in a circle and you need to take it round the circle this tells the software your movement range. This is not just a minor test but it will enable you to work through the menus and make selections.

Each person’s movements are different not just by age but also by how they see things so everyone will need to do the initial setup to get the best from the software.

There is a manual if like me you got the wrong language let them know in Germany and they will email you the right booklet.

It is rare that I say RTFM read the “£$%^&* manual but I do here as setting up the device without this knowledge will at least be ‘interesting’ as part of the setup tells you which way to fit your phone.

For an older person like me controlling the cursor with head movements was not easy and no doubt a younger person would find it easier but up and down gradual movements moves you through the choices which with a little practice is reasonably easy what is harder is focusing the cursor on the central area to make a selection.

There is commentary on the various stars and universe that you might be able to see with a strong telescope and clear conditions. However with Universe to go your lounge of bedroom can see the whole sky by moving your head from side to side and you can even see what they would be seeing on the other side of the world.

Should you wish to learn rather than just view there are quiz questions and far more information on both stars and clusters etc.

In the box is a rubberised headband that should fit from fitments either side of the case but I never worked out even with the right instructions how these fit the strap. There is also a pouch to keep the viewer in.

The viewer itself is 18x10x9cm approximately.

It does mean that to answer your phone while viewing the stars will take a few seconds to remove from the case.
