We live in a society where sounds can cause stress but they can also help us relax.

To sleep, maybe to dream and then awake refreshed for whatever the next day holds for you.  But sometimes the desire for sleep is difficult to come by.  Worries and stress invade your mind thus causing insomnia to take control and block the advance of the longed for sleep condition.  Sometime I find the thought of a required early morning rising can have the adverse effect and thus interfere with my drifting off to sleep.  Offering to help with soothing the path to sleep is this next product which goes by the title of the Soothing Sounds Dial with my review sample being kindly supplied by Prezzybox.com.

Shaped like a fruit pastille sweet, the Soothing Sounds Dial is Apple White in colour with a silver band encircling the body.  The main unit, with rounded corners, has dimensions of 16 x 16 x 5 cm (H x W x D) and is held in an upright position, next to your bed or where ever it is placed, by a metal stand.  According to the supplied instruction sheet of paper, this metal stand cannot be removed once assembled.  However this is definitely not true as I have proved on several occasions and makes me wonder whether there are any other mistakes in the instructions.

As its title indicates, this sound emitting device features a dial.  This is on the front of the device.  This dial is used to switch between the twelve different sounds that the unit can produce.  The sounds are arranged around the dial in a circular arrangement.  I will return to the feature a little later.

The Soothing Sounds Dial can rely on either battery or mains power to perform its task.  However neither method comes supplied with the product.  For battery use you will need to provide the four AA batteries that slot into a concealed compartment on the rear of the unit.  With mains power, the device’s manufacturer recommends using a DC 7.5v approved adapter which connects to the rear of the unit on the left side.  Positioned just below the mains power connection is a 3.5mm jack socket for attaching your favourite set of headphones when private listening is the order of the day.

The rear of the Soothing Sounds Dial device houses the speaker outlet and the various control options.  Individually embossed with appropriate icons, these five control buttons are also clearly labelled with the function name apart from one.  The one exception, positioned in the middle of the five buttons, is that of the power on/off switch.

To the left of the power button are those to apply a fade feature and opt for timer mode.  While the timer can be used to toggle between a period of 30, 60 or 90 minutes of selected audio, the fade feature will gradually decrease the volume level during the final 10 minutes of Timer mode.  Situated on the right of the power button are controls to adjust the volume level of the audio output.

Based on a clock face, the names of the individual sounds are arranged at five minute intervals positioned around the front-mounted dial.  You can select from sounds identified as Relax, Tranquil, Ocean, Rainforest, Meditate, Calm, Campfire, Stream, Peace, Ambience, Rain and White Noise as you turn the dial either clockwise or anti-clockwise.  There were a few occasions when confusingly a sound was selected in the opposite direction to that which I had turned the dial.

Developed by Lifemax, the Soothing Sounds Dial can be used to help you relax when trying to sleep or when feeling stressful at other times of the day.  The company also feels that this device can help to combat the effect of tinnitus but I have been unable to test this feature as I do not suffer from this complaint.  I did find that I needed to avoid some sounds, those involving running water, as a means of inducing sleep, due to them having the opposite effect.  Soothing Sounds Dial is available from Prezzybox.com priced at £22.95.
