Mice from Microsoft

Here I am looking at two rather similar rodents, one for notebooks (smaller) and one for desktops, both are optical (no balls) one is wireless while the other is PS/2 & USB.

Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000

This is the desktop offering but in shape and design it is remarkably similar to the rodent below. It is 12x7x4cm that measurement is the maximum as it is waisted and the 7cm width is around 2cm less in the centre.

This years version of Microsoft’s Intellipoint software has a magnification feature that enables by default – via a button on the side of the mouse – to allow magnification of a portion of the screen. This feature could have it’s uses and as it comes with the software - as a freebie - give it a chance. Also you get four way scrolling from the wheel, this is not called a scroll wheel anymore but a tilt wheel.

This is a wired optical rodent and has an adapter in the box that allows you to connect to both PS/2 and USB ports. For anyone who still needs to access screens on a PC without Windows this is useful as I still find occasions where USB is not recognised.

This is said to work on both PC and Mac. However be warned as far as Windows is concerned the system requirements do not mention anything prior to Windows 2000. The minimum processor is 233MHz with 100MB or hard disc space, as files come on a CD that would be also required.

In use I found it responsive and it can be setup to be accurate for close work at up to 1000 dots per inch. My own mouse is a little smaller and it took a while for me to adjust to the larger dimensions.

Doing my normal Internet search found it at Misco for £13.50 with others from £15 to around £25, this is a huge differential in percentage terms.

Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse

Everything apart from the tethering and the size that I have mentioned for the rodent above applies here. This is smaller than my own rodent at 11x5x4cm this one is only slightly waisted and I liked it a lot, the smaller size was certainly more to my liking and coming after the rather large offering above made it seem twice as small as it really was.

This mouse works on a single AA battery (provided) and this has the effect of cutting down the weight, even grams counts when you are carrying it around. The wireless receiver works from any USB port and when you are moving around snap it back into the base of the mouse. This not only means where the mouse goes so does the wireless receiver but more importantly it saves battery life as the battery is out of use when the receiver is in the base. A nice design, easy storage and best of all a reason to store it there. In use this was absolutely to my liking as I prefer smaller rodents.

Doing my searches found it at Amazon For £19.99 and others up to near £30 again a large percentage difference.
