A Mobile Shaver

Men’s shavers tend to fall into a wet or dry category. However there are some products, of a more recent development, that are classified as being both wet and dry devices for use when removing the stubble that continues to appear on our faces.

This next offering is meant just for dry use when shaving although you can use water to clean the head which, I suppose, almost classifies the unit as both a wet and dry product.  The product in question is the Braun MobileShave M-90 model.  As its title implies, this shaver has been designed specifically as a travelling companion for use when away on business or holiday rather than the main shaver remaining in residence at home although it could still fulfil this latter task if needs be.

Opening the box reveals the shaver unit, two AA Duracell batteries for powering the device and a folded sheet of instructions in various languages.  Not surprisingly, knowing Braun’s antecedents, German is the first language with English taking second place in the list of the supported instructions.

Decked out in a colour scheme of matte black and silver, the MobileShave unit has dimensions of 118 x 57 x 26mm (H x W x D).  With the batteries inserted the shaver weighs 164g.  To insert the batteries, you need to twist the base of the shaver in an anti-clockwise direction through 90 degrees.  You can then use the twisted element as a grip to reveal the compartment into which the two batteries slot.  Appropriate diagrams on the shaver show which way round the batteries should be inserted.  You can then replace the compartment cover and reverse the twist action (clockwise this time) to return the shaver to its original state.

To actual use this shaver you need to turn the silver protective cap, covering the head of this shaver, in either a left or right direction until it clips into position following a 180 degree turn.  This action reveals the shaver foil head and also unlocks the power slider switch that is positioned on the front of the shaver’s body.  You can then turn the shaver on or off as needs be to use this portable shaver.

Not surprisingly, considering its positioning at the budget end of the marketplace, the unit’s shaving head is fixed rather than the adjustable head(s) featured on the more premium priced models which tend to dominate the marketplace.  While the shaver felt smooth when running over my face, it was not as efficient at removing my facial stubble as my usual shaver, a more expensive model with rotating, floating and adjustable heads.  I also found that it was sometime necessary to clean the shaver, midway though a shave, to achieve the best results.

This shaver does have a built-in feature for the removal of longer hairs such as sideboard and moustache trimming.  This feature resides on the body of the shaver until needed when it can slide out from the right side of the shaver.  It can then be used in the normal way to remove unwanted hair.

As mentioned earlier, this shaver can be cleaned after use with water.  You need to hold the shaver under a running tap with or without any liquid soap.  If, as I prefer, you opt for a dry clean then you will need to remove the foil head which is a fairly straightforward task.  Concealed in the base of the shaver is a small brush to help with cleaning.

This brush is only accessible when the silver protective cap is in its original position over the foil head which does cause a slight logistical problem.  When the foil head is available for removal and cleaning, you can not access the brush and when the brush is available, the foil head is blocked.  I will leave you to work out a solution to this problem.

The supplied set of batteries is rated at being capable of providing 60 minutes of shaving time.  Of course the actual number of shaves will depend upon the thickness of stubble to be remove and how smooth the face needs to feel.  The Braun MobileShave M90 is available from a number of outlets and I have seen it listed at £17.49 on Amazon.co.uk.
