Luna Eclipse Speakers

One of these days Edifier is going to produce a speaker system with a more traditional design concept for one of its speaker unit. But this is definitely not one of those days with the arrival of this next Edifier speaker system.

Arriving in packaging that reminded me of a suitcase, the Edifier Luna Eclipse is a 2.0 speaker system that once again put me under pressure when attempting to describe the shape of the speaker units.  Let me deal with simple matters first before getting down to the shape of the speakers.  The two speakers making up this system are decked out predominately in a highly polished lacquered black coating.  I am pleased to report that this coating seemed to be extremely resistant to collecting finger smears when you need to handle these units.

There are a couple of areas, one at the front and one at the rear, which have a matte black finish.  While the front area deals with the main speaker output, the smaller rear panel features the “L” and “R” speaker indicators and the proprietary connection sockets for linking the two speakers together.  The right speaker also contains connects for mains power and a 3.5mm jack socket for audio input plus touch sensitive controls for power and adjusting volume level.  These controls mimic those that are available on the small remote control that forms part of this kit.

Each speaker unit probably started life as a discus shaped block before the design team got to work with their imagination.  A 155mm slice was chopped off from what was to form the front of the speaker.  A second slice, this time measuring 115mm was removed from the base of the block.  The front slice provided an area for the speaker’s 3-inch bass driver and a 19mm silk dome tweeter while the second slice created a base enabling the speaker to stand upright.  Finally a 2 x 13cm slab was cut away from the rear of the speaker to create a gap into which two 3-inch passive bass radiators, facing each other, were slotted.  I have to admit that I found the whole effect to be more visual appealing that some of the earlier Edifier models that I have looked at in the past.

Setting up this speaker system is quick and straightforward.  You should not even need to look at the small multi-lingual User guide.  The clearly marked left and right speaker units are linked together with a 292cm lead with six-pin proprietary plugs at each end.  The two plugs feature an appropriate indicator so that you know which way round the plug should go.  You can then link the right speaker to a power supply and an audio input source using the supplied leads.  The power to activate the speakers can be switched on from the touch controls on the right speaker or using the small, silver remote control unit.

Due to the requirement of an external power source, this speaker system is meant to be used indoors with various entertainment devices providing the audio input.  All the supplied leads are of a reasonable length, especially the linking lead between the speaker units, ensuring that you should have no difficulty when it comes to positioning the two speakers.  However some care does need to be taken with regards positioning as the speakers have a tendency to fall over when knocked.

The Luna Eclipse Speaker System gives you a choice of connectivity for audio sources.  You can use Bluetooth for connecting to any device which supports this technology.  For those devices that do not support Bluetooth, you can connect via the supplied audio lead with 3.5mm jack plugs at each end.  When both connections are set up, then Bluetooth will have priority in delivering its audio.

These good looking speakers can deliver 74W of audio output enhanced by the built-in Digital Sound Processing and Dynamic Range Control.  While this speaker system might not appeal to the committed Hi-Fi enthusiast, the delivered audio quality is more than adequate for general use and the casual listener.  This speaker system will be available from various retailers including PCWorld / Curry’s, priced at £149.99.
