Digital Television Recording with Top Up TV Anytime

The demise of VHS video tape has left a big hole in convenient TV recording not filled by the promise of DVD. This Thomson box from Top Up TV offers a rich set of features at an unbeatable price.
TopUp TV Digital Television Recorder

Hard disk recorders have been around for a little while - most famously pioneered by Tivio and then, in the UK, by the Sky+ box. Great if you're a Sky subscriber. With the advent of FreeView based Digital Television Recorders (DTR) this facility is available to the masses without the expense or restrictions of a subscription-only services.

Top Up TV have launched their own product in this space - the "Top Up TV+ DTR" - not quite as catchy as "sky+" - but don't let that put you off. The hardware is from Thomson - the 'DTI6300-16'.

This DTR offers an impressive feature set - including two independent tuners and a 160Gbyte hard disk onto which programmes can be recorded. The two tuners allow you to record one channel while watching another - or to record two channels at the same time. 160G is sufficient for storing around 100 hours of television - enough to keep even the most ardent TV addict satisfied!

Over and above the functions of a traditional video recorder, hard disk systems integrated with digital TV offer a wealth of additional functions that, once used, you'll wonder how you lived without. 'Pause Live TV' is an oft quoted example. At the press of the button literally freeze the action on a live TV show. No fumbling around looking for a spare tape - rewinding the tape or other time wasting exercises. Ideal for when that unexpected guest turns up right in the middle of the latest episode of Lost, or the phone rings with a vital double glazing sales offer you can't resist. You don't have to wait for the end of the programme to start watching. One of my favourite uses of this feature is to pause the first 10 minutes of a show and then fast forward through the adverts!

Digital TV also benefits from integration with a live programme guide - EPG (Electronic Programme Guide). There have been countless attempts to make it easier to correctly record programmes from bar-codes to special numbers printed in the papers. All obsolete now with EPG - the DTR knows the channel you're watching and automagically stops recording at the end of the show. Timed programming is also simplified by selecting the programme you want to record from the guide. No coming home to watch the latest Big Brother only to find that you've recorded an hour of cricket because you got the channel wrong. And finally you can even decide to record an entire series with one instruction - never miss an episode of Dr Who again!

This kind of operation has been dubbed 'time-shifting' - using DTRs to choose when to watch a programme rather than have that dictated by the broadcaster. In a recent survey conducted by Top Up TV, 57% of their DTR customers said that they regularly used the time-shift feature to watch their programmes at a time convenient to them.

I've been using this product for a little while now with only minor hiccups, most of them non-serious. One of the most annoying 'niggles' concerns video rewind which often results in a click of the 'rewind' button sending you all the way back to the start of the programme rather than simply reversing play. I've checked with the Top Up people and this is a known issue and a fix is currently being tested (more in a moment). The user interface needs a little polishing, mainly in user feedback. It can often be unclear whether the action you've taken on the remote has been received.

The most serious problem concerned on a couple of occasions when the device locked up, requiring power to be removed. On one occasion this coincided with rewinding a video and so it is quite possibly part of the problem mentioned above.

Software Upgrade

I indicated the problems above to be 'minor' - even the odd lock up - why? Because of the excellent and transparent software upgrade service provided by the Top Up TV people. This happens over night in the same way as programme downloads - over the air. You don't have to do anything and you don't loose any content. In the few weeks I've been using the DTR the software has been upgraded twice resulting in more reliable software and an improvement in the user interface. While one can argue that products should be completely tested before being shipped - this is mitigated in cases such as this where there is a reliable post-ship software upgrade feature.

In my smiley rating I had to take into account the product as I reviewed it and so the niggles I experienced reflected in ease of use - without those ease-of-use would have been at least a 4. Given the downloads so far though I'm pretty confident that the engineers are serious about fixing bugs - and if I still have the product here after the next software upgrade I'll come back and comment on the changes!

TV Anytime service

Most people in the UK now have at least heard of digital TV, and of Freeview as the natural heir to traditional analogue TV. Freeview is received through your existing, standard TV aerial, and once you've bought suitable hardware is free to use - just like terrestrial TV. You do get a lot more channels, including all your existing favourites.

The technology behind Freeview also offers the opportunity to deliver additional 'paid for' services. TV Anytime is just one such service and it works in conjunction with the DTR+ box. The system works by using the recording capabilities of the DTR+ box to 'download' a number of programmes to the internal hard-disk over night. Up to around 150 programmes will be automatically downloaded ready for you to browse and watch at your leisure.

Programmes are downloaded from a number of specific channels including the likes of uktv-gold, Paramount Comedy, Disney and British Eurosport. A set up menu allows you to remove channels that do not interest you.

TV Anytime is activated through a special 'feature' card that slots into the front of the receiver. The basic price of that service is £9.99 per month for the basic service, and there are some premium channels such as Setanta for sports that attract an additional charge.

The downloaded programmes are valid for 7 days from when they are recorded, after which they are automatically deleted to make way for more downloads. If there is a programme in the list though that you want to keep for longer you can simply save that to the user area and you have as much time as you want.

I don't watch a lot of TV, however I found it really good that when I wanted to watch something and the usual channels were devoid of anything interesting I could usually find something interesting in the downloaded library.

Summary

At around £85, ignoring TV Anytime, you have an excellent DTR capable of storing over 100 hours of programming, recording two channels simultaneously and in the process probably avoiding a few arguments over Christmas! For those of you that want more variation the option of Top Up TV Anytime to augment your own library is an excellent idea and worked very well.

The best price I found for the Top Up DTR+ is from Amazon at £85 including shipping and a 30 free trial for TopUp Anytime. It's also available from John Lewis for £99.95 with a 2 year gaurantee.

Mule

You are probably better off getting rid of your corrupt recordings by doing a factory reset. You will lose all recordings stored on your hard drive

Go to Menu > then Set Up > then Help and then press Green button on handset, and then press Red button on your handset. Then press Green button on your handset if you wish to continue with the reset.

Not gonna rate cos this machine is crap.  Had it for 12 motnhs now and decided to go to BT Vision instead.  Only got it for Setanta but this is starting to annoy me because when watching a live game it freezes all the time, when recording a programme and watch something else from library standby light will come on and stops recording.  Seems to be getting worse.  What a waste of money.  Don't buy one.

DP : I think Comet are wrong in refusing you a refund.

The following business link result makes interesting reading :
   http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?r.l1=1073861169&r.l3=1074034195&type=RESOURCES&itemId=1073792594&r.l2=1074400662&r.s=sc

In particular :
"If goods don't meet these criteria, purchasers can claim a refund if they haven't already "accepted" them. Customers accept goods if they tell you they've accepted them, alter the goods or keep them for a reasonable length of time. They can't, however, reject goods simply because they've changed their mind."

along with the bullet point : "Goods must be of "satisfactory quality" - they must be durable, safe and free from minor, as well as major, defects.". From the discussion on this forum it is certainly not free of even some major defects.

The following government site is also useful :

Do let us know how you get on though. I'm using version 2.99 software and it does seem to be a lot more reliable.

Fixes? Or is it a fix?

Bought one from Comet - because I have opened the box and used it they won't take it back unless they prove it doesn't work.

The box has hung 3 times and missed recordings - what I would call not fit for purpose - but not according to Comet unless their engineers independently verify the hanging problem - "fat chance". I returned it within 24 hours and they didn't have an engineer so rather than give them the box I decided to research some fixes.

So far I have discovered.

Current software version is 2.99
Check by MENU / SETUP / HELP

Only 1 of the Tuners was picking up a signal.
MENU / SETUP / HELP / PRESS RED BUTTON

Now fixed - tip make sure there are 6 numbers listed next to Frequencies at the top of the page. Change both tuners to one of these numbers(or two different?). Both tuners should be picking up a signal strength and quality of at least 5 for proper operation.

2) Turn off the RF Modulator
MENU / SETUP / CUSTOMISE DTR / RF MODULATOR
Keep adjusting the number of the RF Modulator till it says off and use a SCART lead instead.

Lets see if that works.

PS I already owned a Humax 9200 which since its last sw update works like a dream and is highly recommended compared to the Thomson.

Hi .. I bought the Thomson TopupTV box in April .. have made loads of recordings and its 95% full on hard drive .. however .. recently its been freezing 5 + times in an evening, plus not making recordings.  I phoned TUTV help desk and they said that as my box has only 5% left on its memory - thats why its freezing .. Turns out that you need a minimum of 10% left on it - so that it works properly.  I am currently deleting films and stuff off the memory .. so if you dont hear from me again .. its worked ..!! :-)

Told them they needed to update their web page and istruction book with this information - but i doubt they will....  Good luck everyone else who bought one of these machines!

Try a factory reset, but I think from what I've heard it's somewhat terminal. You may have to format the hard disc from what I've been reading on other forums.

Try this for a possible solution...

Re my (Maverick) comments of 28 Aug 2008...   I thought I would share my subsequent experience...

Having bought the Humax 9200T and been delighted with it; I thought I would replace the other room's VHS recorder and make a full transition to digital.

So, I bought another!   However, it would not deliver a reasonable level of sound to my big TV (a Philips) without having the TV on full volume.   This is apparently also a 'known problem' with this unit.

So, I looked at the 9150 and 9300 which both seem to suffer from noisy fan syndrome.   I e-mailed Humax Technical Support and they confirmed they were aware of the problems and that they were working on an OTA software fix to slow the fan down to make it quieter; but they couldn't say when that might happen.

On that basis; I bought a 9150 (thinking how noisy can a fan be, afterall?)knowing that in  the longer term it would be quietened by a software fix.

Well! after just a few hours the 9150 was back in its box and ready to go back.   The fan noise is rediculous even for a short while.

With my other freeview box and DVD/HDD recorder being Sony, and absolutely superb, I will now wait until Sony market a twin tuner PVR.

I've had one of these for around a year now and had some of the problems mentioned here including the infamous rewind bug. I've also had it lock up now and then. I noticed another software upgrade happened at the start of August (just noticed the message) so thought I'd have a play.

Haven't tried the live-TV pause/rewind (which was more prone to crashing) but managed spent around 10 minutes randomly pushing FF and Rewind up to x64 and no crashes.

Has anyone else noticed this version being more robust?

Have finally replaced the Thomson 'piece-of-pooh' with a Humax 9200T.So far so good, does have one neat facility where you can edit a section of a recording, save it as a separate file & then delete the original recording if you want to.Thus saving HDD space.

Had one of these for a while. Constant lockups on a daily basis, missed recordings and that annoying fast rewinfd bug. After about nine months it decided to pack up completely. Flashing red light. Apparently it's called the red light of death. Couldn't find the receipt so took the hard disk out and put it in my PC. Wanged the box as far as I could at the local tip. Now got Vista running on the disk I put in my PC. (Will I ever learn). Went out and bought a Humax 9150T, not looked back.

Maverick, Humax recently released both the PVR-9150T and the 9300-T. We're currently reviewing the 9150, which looks as solid as the older 9200 so far. The main difference appears to be in connections - the 9150 just has SCART in/out - no separate A/V outputs and no USB (the latter not being much of a loss). For most people that don't want to wire the PVR up to sophisticated sound system the 9150 is probably a good option - but stay tuned for the full report shortly!

Thinking about it, it might be worth hanging onto these boxes. Look at how other dismal technological failures from the past have become ‘cult’ items. The Sinclair C5, for example, is a real collector’s item now!

I have to say as both myself and my mum have one of these boxes we are often comparing how well or bad it has worked in a particularly week. Plus we compare who has the better box since it seems to work well for a while whilst the other plays up then changes over.
We also have competitions on the amound of messages. I managed to get 60 the other day, all for missed recordings that I hadn't even set up.

Ed-you are a glutton for punishment.I now treat all this boxes faults as a form of entertainment in itself-will it record what i've requested?,leap back 2hrs on slow rewind/fast forward?,freeze when it feels like? or only allow me to record up to 3hrs & tell me i have 0% left on the disc? The list goes on and on cest la vie!!!!

I have had two boxes and had more problems with the first which I had no top up added than the second which I have, so don't think that rule follows. In fact had very few problems with this one. But why does it always refuse to record when we go on holiday and can do nothing about it!
Rating:

Comment by D Alcock, Aug 21, 2008 6:53

I have had the box two months, and had some quirks. However, the noise disappeared after a week = I think it was the hard drive? and it does hang at times, but not often so I just unplug it and it works OK after that. The worst is the fast rewind as stated elsewhere, but I found if I freeze recording occasionally it  will only go back as far as the last freeze point!  My question is...what is the USB plug for near where you put the top-up card in front drop down slot.  Incidentally I never used the free card offer for more top-up channels and I think this is why I have had less problems.

I think it's fair to say that in most cases "you get what you pay for". I'll make an exception in the case of the Thomson, it wasn't worth the dosh, as cheap as it was. It appears that the Humax is a popular choice and it certainly appears to be reliable.

Thanks -

No, I only googled 'Thomson DTI6300' after the bugger kept freezing up to see if there was 'a history' and hence ended up on this site.

Obvioulsy in future I will google first and buy second.

Having now reading umpteen reviews; keep coming up with Humax 9200T?
