Samsung SH100 Digital Camera

While most other small digital camera manufacturers use SD cards for image storage, Samsung have always used the micro SD, a little fiddly to get in and out and of course the other problem is they are always more expensive.

The Samsung SH100 Digital Camera measures 9.5x5x2cm and weights 130grams. It is black but not that horrible shiny black, if only the screen did not show fingermarks.

This is made worse by the fact that this unit is almost totally touchscreen so keep a cloth handy to clean the TFT.

The left side just says 14.2MP, the right side has a door to cover the mini HDMI socket and wrist strap anchor point, the base has a tripod screw and the door behind which is the solid battery and micro SD card insertion point. This leaves the top and the face.

The top has the slightly depressed on/off button and the shutter release button around which is the telephoto / wide angle control. The back has 6.8x3.8cm TFT display – 3inch imperial diagonal measurement and just two buttons one at the top to switch from shooting to display and one at the bottom to go back to the home screen.

The Home Screen in fact is a choice of twenty eight icons not all strictly to do with shooting modes although these are there.

Still image modes are 14MP 4320x3240, 12MP 4320x2880, 10MP wide 4320x2432, 10MP 3648x2736, 5MP 2592x1944, 3MP 1964x1488, 2MP 1920x1080 and 1MP 1024x768.

When in a 4x3 shooting mode the display is 5x3.8cm – close to 2.5inches diagonal – with flash and menu displayed temporarily on the left of the screen below the one permanent icon the mode you are in. On the right again displayed temporarily are number of images available to take at that resolution the micro SD card is inserted and battery state along the top with resolution selected as well as flash ready icon down the right side.

The movie mode uses the full width of the TFT to show what can be captured so the icons are overlaid. The only two permanently displayed are the mode and ‘Standby’ when not shooting. However the amount of time remaining on the card together with other information such as shooting size are shown for a few seconds from recall.

Movie sizes are 1280x720 HQ, 1280x720, 640x480, 320x240 or 320 Web (for sharing). This is chosen from the menu button that opens when you touch the bottom left of the display it also allows you select Frame Rate – either 30 or 15FPS – Voice which has three settings sound on, sound off and mute, finally a timer mode.

Image quality was good with those taken with the small bar flash which is mounted above and to the left of the 5x optical lens – 4.7-23.5mm – ok to about 3.5metres but then things faded badly into the background of the image.

It is possible to transfer images by Wi-Fi, so for those wanting to put images or clips on You Tube or Facebook it’s ideal. It is even possible using the Wi-FI to email directly from the camera. Does your PC support Wireless Wake-on Lan if so then the camera will automatically back up your images to the PC for you. All Share allows you to view images on your TV.
