LG Fun Mobile Phone Pop GD510

Image of author
This phone is clearly marked GD510 on the box and while the initial press release called it the LG Fun their website (link at the end) calls it the LG Pop. Either way this phone packs a lot in and I can see it being popular.

The LG POP GD510 mobile phone measures 9.5x5x1.3cm and it weights 85grams. Perhaps the fun name came as the range of shades it has. The face is black apart from the single button area near the base that is grey, as are the sides with the exception of the top left corner that is a chrome colour, finally the back is a gun metal grey. The viewable area of the face is 6.5x4cm.

This phone was new when it arrived and in a box it even had all its accessories including a tiny 68 page user manual that was – joy of joys – all in English. However I expect most will just press the on/off button on the top of the phone and go from there.

Total buttons are four, on/off on the top, up/down left side towards the top, camera right side towards the bottom and screen return on the front near the bottom apart from that everything is totally touch on the screen.

The screen can be as cluttered or uncluttered as you want thanks to widgets that can fill up almost every part of it. For instance the top line of icons battery state digital clock etc can be augmented by an analogue clock should you wish. The bottom line Calls/Contacts/Messaging/Icons are permanent everything else can be added or closed down.

A two second push on the on/off button will start the unit and twenty seconds later you should be able to make and receive calls. I know I am one of the few people who turn a phone off this action takes around six seconds.

One thing I have yet to mention is the USB port for charging and hands free connection, this door is on the left near the bottom. The back slides off to insert your SIM card and any micro SD card you might want to increase the internal memory.

The menu screen has more icons than can be displayed in the four groups of Communications, Entertainment, Utilities and Settings. Just slide your finger across the screen to scroll through the choices. In vertical mode four rows of four are displayed. However turn the unit through ninety degrees and the screen changes to landscape and four rows of eight icons are shown.

The camera and video camera are both accessed by the button on the right side to switch between camera/video camera there is a slider on the right side of the screen when in camera/video camera mode. While 3MP may seem less than optimal today it is still enough to print a full A4 image if you take a decent image, there is no flash so do not expect brilliant images in poor light, video is either 320x240 or 176x144.

During the summer you should be able to use the phone virtually continuously if you purchase the optional solar-cell powered battery cover that charges the phone by using the power of the sun. Without this talk time is limited to under four hours and standby time is around two weeks.

Just like all recent LG phones it has Bluetooth, Web Browser and Multimedia Player however unlike others this 3inch touchscreen is probably the smallest.

Doing my Internet searches found the LG GD510 available free on a range of monthly contracts from the first link below.
