Yes the bottom part (pull out) section is transparent and without the light around the touchpad you would probably be guessing where the numbers are so you can dial. However this phone from LG will no doubt be a hit with the stylish.

The LG GD900 touch screen mobile phone measures 10.5x5.5x1.5cm when shut and the first figure increases by 3cm when the numeric pad is open. It weights 126grams and has a very solid feel.

I know I am one of only a small percentage of people who regularly turn a phone off but for the others of my persuasion its 20 seconds to the default front screen and around 50 seconds to being able to make a phone call. To switch off from pressing the button is around 8 seconds.

The top of the phone has the on/off button, the top of the left side has the stereo earphone connector, the base has the battery release button while the right side has at the top the volume up and down keys and finally the camera key midway down the side, to use this you need the slide to be open.

The face has the earpiece and charger port at the top above the screen and beside this the proximity sensor next to this is the inner camera. The screen is 6.5x4cm called 3inches and below this are the send key, multi tasking key and the end key. Push the unit upwards to reveal twelve keys that are etched grey on a clear transparent plastic and in strong light they are all but invisible. However for seven seconds after the push they are lit round the side making the four rows quite clear they are the normal format of 1 2 3, 4 5 6, 7 8 9, * 0 #.

Slide the transparent part to reveal the 8MP camera this can take images at other settings and it works well in less than perfect light, there is a tiny mirror that allows the image taker to be included in images idea for the day out with friends. There are lots of options and choices including those for movie taking and this begins to get close to the quality of a point and shoot camera once you work though the choices available.

The default screen has a top line of reception quality, a speaker symbol, battery state and the time. There are just three icons below this Write Messages, Music and Alarms. Just above a bottom line is the name of your provider. The bottom line has four icons, Dialling that has a soft keyboard, Contacts, Inbox and finally access to all 32 icons. If you hold the phone vertically you see the first four in each of the four sections but if you turn it horizontally you get four lines of eight icons and therefore have an immediate access to all 32 icons.

These are broken into four sections and with a little scratching of the head you should be able to work out which of the four heading will hide what you are looking for from Communication, Multimedia, Utilities and Settings.

Briefly the eight icons under Communication are Contacts, History, Browser, Inbox, Email, Dialling, Video Call, and Google. Multimedia has Music, Camera, Video Camera, View Images, My Stuff, Games and Applications, FM Radio and Save Movie as. Utilities has Alarms, Organiser, Memo, Stopwatch, Voice Recorder, Calculator, World Clock and Unit Converter. Finally Settings has Profiles, Screen Settings, Phone Settings, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Call Settings, Connectivity and Message Settings.

You do not have to delve into the settings above to change your home screen just move your finger rapidly from left to right across the screen to display the next choice. There are four themes each with a basic colour but by holding a pop up box you can change the default to this option.

Zooming is very easy when viewing documents or images just place two fingers on the screen and close them to zoom one way and open to zoom the other, a nice feature. There is a small but well laid out 115 page User Guide that explains everything in detail and any queries and problems you have this should be able to sort out.

Doing an Internet search for phone prices (especially when new) is a nightmare as they change so frequently. If you have a contract then you may be able to upgrade. If you are on Pay as you go then search the main shop groups to find the best offer.
