iPhone extras - Is there an App for that?

Image of author
In this final part of the look into the iPhone economy I take a softer approach - looking at what you can load onto your iPhone from Apples appStore

Human beings are endlessly inventive. A quick trip to the iTunes App Store will confirm that. I don't even know how to describe the breadth and depth of what is out there, but here a are few apps that I just love.

BugMe! sticky notes £0.59

Do you remember things in the middle of the night, when you are out and about? This app works just like a pad of post its. You can either use your finger to scrawl a quick note to yourself or the keyboard if you need more detail. Set a time to be reminded or email it on.

Pocket PT £90

I am not a great fan of exercise so anything that makes it easy to do is fantastic. Pocket PT is an online personal trainer with an iPhone app so you can take your exercise programme with you everywhere you go - to the park or in the gymn. The website is incredibly comprehensive with advice on diet, fitness and a forum to meet other people who are using the programme. Everything is done with video which drives you through the site and there is a very clear explanation of each exercise. For me Pocket PT was a little pushy and I would have preferred to be able to choose the trainer. Daniel Newman is great but his voice does grate after a while. Also I felt that this is really geared for men or people that are used to training. Even the performance test was daunting for me. The first task was how many full press ups can you do in a minute - how butch is that? If you are serious about exercise I am sure you will enjoy this app.

Purple Ronnie's Create-a-Card £0.59

Perfect for that D'oh moment when you realise you have forgotten someone's Birthday. In the words of Purple Ronnie....

If it's a special occasion
But you don't know what to say
Let Purple Ronnie pen it
By downloading this app today

Yell Labs for iPhone 3GS Free

If you haven't come across augmented reality before you really should try this innovative new App that combines augmented reality with Yell.com UK local business data. Using the compass in the device, local UK information from Yell.com is overlaid on the camera viewfinder of your phone. Very cool.

Voucher Cloud Free

I love this app because it works so well for me when I am out and about. Hundreds of ace discounts are delivered direct to your screen - all sorted by category of choice and those nearest to you. A quick bite to eat (even a free coffee!), lunch, slap up meal, something from the fashion store, days out, voucher codes for online shopping… it's all there.

Bejewelled £1.79

This addictive game has been a huuuge hit on Facebook and on the iPhone it is even more fun. Move the jewels to line them up, 3 or more, and they pop and vanish. Against the clock, how many can you score?

V&A Quilts £2.39

The V&A always has amazing exhibitions on and for their current look at Quilts from 1700-2010 they have created an app guide which is incredibly interesting with some fantastic visuals. Only downside is you can't go in close to the quilts to get a really good look at the work look.

My Starbucks Free

I love a good Tall Soy Tchai Tea Latte, no water, since you're asking. If you want to try one this app will find your nearest store

Sleep Cycle alarm clock £0.59

Do you wake up feeling like you have a head full of cotton wool even though you have had 8 hours sleep? Maybe its because you are being woken by your alarm during a period of deep sleep. It's much better to wake when you are in a light sleep. By putting your iPhone next to you in bed (don't cover it up though) this app is sensitive to your movements. We move more during light sleep, apparently. So if I set my alarm for 7.30 and the app senses I am in light sleep at 7.15 it will wake me early because I will feel more refreshed. Makes sense and it does work.
