Mobile Protection
I first came across and wrote about DriveSentry last year (article here). In the intervening period, the company has been busy developing a new product which is currently available exclusively from the PC World chain of stores. This product is DriveSentry GoAnywhere. It has been developed to safeguard removable devices from the one million plus Internet viruses that have been identified by computer experts. DriveSentry GoAnywhere will be available as a boxed product or as part of a removable tools' bundle that include a drive and storage media.
Whereas some anti-virus products provide protection aimed at the main system box, DriveSentry GoAnywhere spreads it sphere of influence over a wider area to cover removable mobile devices that could at some time or other come into contact with the main system box. Included in DriveSentry GoAnywhere protection shield will be mobile phones, digital cameras, iPods, MP3 players, memory cards and USB sticks available from a variety of sources.
Installing the product is relatively straightforward requiring a live Internet connection. You will need to set up an Advisor Account by entering a user-name, password, email address and country plus typing in an on-screen security code. The final stage involves entering a 25-character purchase code that is supplied with the product.
At the heart of the DriveSentry approach to protection is the use of a patented "tri-security" technology. This feature brings together a white-list of good programs; a black-list of known rogue programs; and DriveSentry's Advisor community trusted programs which are based on user-orientated statistics. This information allows the software to be selective and only allow trusted programs access to your system. As a result the software is able to offer protection for various removable devices without putting too much of a burden on system resources.
Generally the software fulfilled its task of providing protection for the various devices that connected to my system at various times. However I did discover one problem when using the software on a USB memory stick. If I neglected to remove the USB device, the system would hang during any boot-up sequence. The only way to get out of this impasse was to remove the USB stick and then restart the computer. Once the boot sequence was completed, I could re-insert the USB stick containing the DriveSentry GoAnywhere software.
As mentioned earlier, DriveSentry GoAnywhere is currently exclusive to PC World stores. The boxed version has been priced at £19.99. Apart from the problem caused by forgetting to remove the USB stick, DriveSentry GoAnywhere worked well without causing any noticeable degradation to performance when running on the Windows XP platform.
