Samsung Netbook NC110

Often for the person who just does Word Processing, works the family accounts using a Spreadsheet, sends and receives Email, and of course browses the Internet a Netboot is all one will need. One to consider might be this Samsung offering.

I had the Samsung NC110 netbook for a few days before I moved it into daylight and realised it has a violet top. I knew it had a white keyboard with the screen surround make up of black with tiny grey dots and the base is of course the standard black.

It is 25,5x17.5x3cm the last figure is the thickness and the 3cm applies at the back that curls down over the battery at the front it is only 2cm thick. The total weight is around 1170grams, this enables one hand to carry it comfortably.

The left side has power input, Ethernet and a USB2 port. The front has five pin hole LEDs and the most concealed SD card slot I have ever seen. The right side has the earphone and microphone sockets, two further USB sockets VGA out and of course the indispensable Kensington lock port as at this size it fits into a poacher’s pocket. Finally my first moan the on/off switch fits towards the back and on my unit it has a hair trigger and just moving a hand near it activates it. Either make it require a harder push or reset it slightly please.

There is nothing along the back edge mainly because the battery swells and this brings on my second moan the screen only goes around 45degrees past vertical on occasions using it in various setting I would have liked a bit more movement towards 180 degrees.

As I like to remind people – maybe to often – my job is to find the problems and this does not mean this is not a nice unit.

Open the lid and the 22.5x12.7cm viewable screen is the standard 10.1inch imperial diagonal offering, the normal display for a Netbook is 1024x600 this is does fine but it can also show 1024x768 but this is at a cost of slower response times and the display does appear a little stretched but Easy Resolution Manager is there to give you the greater display size if required.

While on software you get Windows Starter Edition that has almost everything the user might require including of course the Starter Editions of Word and Excel fine providing you can accept the adverts on the right edge of the screen.

You also get 2XL Games, Cyber Link software to work with the built in WedCamthis includes a rather nice mirror option that might appeal to ladies. Especially the zoom feature when they are adjusting their make up arrangements.

Other software includes trials of Norton Internet Security and Online Backup. You also get some Samsung applets. A few words on the User Guide a nice easy to follow Desktop guide that easily gets the novice up and running knowing what their Netbook is capable of and stops them being scared to try the various program applets.

Yes I found the colour combos of my unit a little strange, the very trigger happy on/off annoyed me and I would have liked the screen to go down more towards 180 degrees.

The six hour battery life was good as all my tests were with Wireless and Bluetooth on as well as a good screen brightness. I also used a fair bit of disc activity with various external hard disks. The recharge time (while off) was 140 minutes. I liked the matt white finish for the keyboard and more importantly the trackpad area.

The processor is an Intel Atom CPU N550 running at 1.5GHz. There is 1GB of RAM and 215GB of hard disc spread over ‘C’ and ‘D’. The Windows Experience is 3, made up of Processor 3.1, RAM 4.5, Graphics 3, Gaming Graphics 3, and Hard Disc 5.6. Startup took 45seconds and shutdown 20 seconds.

Doing my Internet searches found the Samsung Netbook NC110 at £269.08 with free delivery.
