Acer Aspire 4820TG

This I am told will give you 12 hours of battery life, I never got beyond six hours or so, so I assume there are two battery combinations available. I did test it several times hence the slightly longer than normal review period.

Acer Aspire Timeline X 4820T laptop

The Acer Aspire 4820TG measures 34x24.5x3cm and delightfully matt black so fingermarks do not show. The inside area around the keyboard is mostly grey but unfortunately the area around the screen is shiny black and the screen itself is very reflective. The weight of the unit with normal (six hour) battery is just over two kilos, I would assume around 2.3kilos with the twelve hour battery but please check before you buy as that figure is only my own guess.

The viewable screen is 31x17.5 giving the notional diagonal measurement of 14inches. There is an 85key keyboard with the alpha and numeric keys being full size 1.5x1.5cm with 2mm between the keys. Behind the keyboard is a 4.5cm strip with four LED’s and three buttons that includes the on button. In front of the keyboard is an 8cm strip with the 9x6cm trackpad being 10cm from the left side and 15cm from the right side.

The left side has VGA out, HDMI out, Ethernet and USB port as well as two 3.5mm sockets for microphone and headphones. The front edge has a multi card slot along with three pin hole LED’s. The right side has the input for DC power, the DVD drive and three more USB ports. The rear is clear as the bottom of the screen slides over it.

Shutdown is 14 seconds and bootup is 70 seconds. As stated I used the unit in light use with a little wireless access and on three occasions got very close to six hours battery use and on checking the Acer site see note about availability of 9 cell batteries.

The processor is an Intel Core i5 2.27GHz and it has 4GB of RAM. The Windows expience score is a very acceptable 5.6 made up of processor 6.7, Memory 5.9, Graphics 6.7, Gaming Graphics 6.7 and Hard Disc 5.6.

It comes with Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit) and a sixty day trail of Microsoft office and McAfee Security as well as the normal raft of Acer games (trials) and various Applets. NTI software as well as Acer Crystal Webcam software for the almost invisible webcam mounted in the centre of the top of the screen surround.

While the screen is less bright running on batteries (using default settings) it is certainly not one of those that will send you blind very quickly, Acer also save some battery by turning off the optical drive by default when on battery.

The reflective screen means you do need to position yourself carefully in strong sunlight roll on the day when non reflective screens become mainstream.

A very nice – not too heavy – notebook, very well balanced and although I am not a gamer the gaming figures seem quite good. I used it both wired and wirelessly to connect the Internet and it worked efficiently with both.

Yes I did play the odd game of three taking advantage of the various range of third party games Acer supply with one hour demos available. Certainly a plus and of course should you like them then you can buy the ones you like.

I am not a huge McAfee fan but of course you do need security and it works.

Doing my Internet searches found the Acer Aspire Timeline 4820TG at a best price of £687.92 including free delivery from the first link below.
