Conceptronic 11n Wireless ADSL2+ Modem and Router

This has the bold statement on the box ‘Up to 14x faster and up to 6x better range than 802.11g’ Speed is of course useful and range is vital if you are using the wireless option at anywhere near it’s distance capacity.

Conceptronic C300APRA2 802 11n wifi router

The Conceptronic 11n Wireless ADSL2+ Modem and Router measures 20x15x2.5cm with cables inserted and black in colour. The front has eight small LED’s (hopefully green) and the right side a push button that I will go into detail about in a little while. The left side the top and base have nothing.

This leaves the back. This has three screw in aerials along its length as well as lead input from your broadband supplier, power adapter input and of course the four Ethernet connectors to complete the connections.

A CD is provided and while it has a range of headings from its front screen the one that should get things running is Quick Start this takes you through all the basics that should be enough to get you up and running and connected to the Internet. In most cases all you should need to know is your ISP details user name and password.

While the Guide and User Manual printed and online the latter via Acrobat that the CD will install should it be needed give full details and offer good help if anything does not pan out as it should. Most can just enter 192.168.0.1 in their web browser. Enter the default username and password for the Conceptronic Modem and Router and you should then see the front end Window. You want the first option Quick Start and then press Run Wizard.

This has four steps first change the default password (remember anyone will know the default setting used by the manufacturer) second choose your time zone, third select your connection type and enter your user name and password, finally save the settings to the modem router and that is it. Wait a few seconds and then you should have a line of green lights on the modem router and that means you should be able to connect to the Internet.

The other settings available should not be required unless you have an unusual setup or you want to connect wirelessly. If you are using the wireless option then you really should set a password to stop your connection being available to anyone. Full details are given and the previously mentioned button on the side of the modem router can assist you to easily set this up.

So you should now have three passwords. The one used to connect to the Internet (your ISP), the one to access the 192.168.0.1 (modem router) and a third one to stop outsiders accessing your connection an d stealing your bandwidth or even worse stealing your data and personal information. Make the passwords hard so nothing like girl friend or cat’s name. Include bother letters and numbers and lastly don’t leave the name lying around.

The other sections available from the front screen are Interface Setup, Advance Setup, Access Management, Maintenance, Status and Help.

So now to try to handle the claims made on the box, first the speed claims I was using a draft ‘N’ modem router before but by testing my connection speeds (they vary of course according to times of the day) I got around a 10% speed increase, remember their claims were made over ‘G’ that was in theory anyway a lot slower.

As for the wireless connection this was good even if I walked to the bottom of my garden, the real enemy of wireless connectivity is walls and steel girders and while I have plenty of walls I do not have the girders around me.

Doing my Internet searches did not find the Conceptronic (C300APRA2) 300mbps 11n Wireless ADSL2+ Modem and Router currently in the UK but I am informed that it will shortly be available from Amazon.

Available for €91.81 from the following link:
