Sony VAIO W11SIE Netbook

There seem to be more new Netbooks around than Notebooks. Here a small offering from Sony, I wonder why part numbers need to be complicated W11SIE is hardly likely to flow off your tongue when you pop down to your dealers.

The Sony Vaio W11SIE netbook measures 26.5x17.5x2.5cm and weights 1120grams. Mine was a lovely matt white (with a hint of blue) colour apart from the silver vaio inset into the lid.

The battery raises the base by around .5cm to give the keyboard some rake. The back is clear as the screen folds down over it. Front has wireless on/off slider, two card slots one for MS and one for SD, three LED’s and the slider to turn the unit on.

The left side has the DC input, VGA outlet and audio sockets for microphone and headset. The right side has two USB sockets and Ethernet port.

Open the lid and the silver grey keyboard surrounded by the grey surround is revealed. The screen surround is white and the viewable screen is 22x12.5cm giving the notional diagonal measurement of 10.1 inches. Above the screen is a motion eye webcam, as the surround is white this is far more noticeable than it would be on black.

The keyboard has 83 keys with the alpha and numeric keys (1.3x1.1cm) being than the others but spacing between the keys is nearly .4cm so no real danger of hitting two keys at once. This is just about touch typeable.

The trackpad is 10cm from the left and 11cm from the right with three pin hole LED’s on the top edge of it.

The processor is an Intel Atom 1.66GHz and it has 1GB or RAM. The hard disc is stated at 160GB with 145GB of it is a single ‘C’ unit. The rest I assume is a hidden recovery partition.

The software is Windows XP Home, a range of VAIO utilities, some ArcSoft applications, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Roxio Easy Media Creator. Norton Online Backup is on the PC but no anti virus was present on the PC.

Of course not having anti virus does tend to give better boot and shutdown times but as one can become infected in seconds short sighted. The boot time was 35seconds and shutdown 10seconds.

There is a User Guide installed that seems quite comprehensive, however I searched though its 127 pages and could find no mention of Anti Virus.

The applications I added (via USB stick) seemed quite responsive. Sound quality through the hidden speaker was good and plenty loud enough for such a device. The web cam and the ArcSoft software are worthy of a mention as not only does it capture good quality images even in low light (up to 640x480) it even has a monitoring application.

You would need a word processing/spreadsheet package and perhaps when you have installed some anti virus software one of the free ones could be downloaded from the WWW. Otherwise this small neat Netbook was a rather nice package.

Doing my Internet searches found the Sony VAIO W11SIE at a best price of £328.97 including free delivery from the first link below.

Really cormfortable keyboard, touchpad very functional. The size is perfect and feels the weight just taking into account the characteristics of desktop replacement and capacity. It has a very powerful processor and decent video. The only exception is on the screen. Although the 1920P resolution is great, the blacks seem to wash quickly when the screen is not perfectly perpendicular. However, I would recommend this PC. http://www.thesonyworld.com/category/laptops

Price has dropped nearly £50 since the review was written so I would now give it four smileys for value.
