Sony DXC-WX7

A small – very small – digital camera from one of the best camera manufacturers. In fact if you are well built you may find some of the controls a little fiddly this is as a direct relation to the small – even by modern standards – size.

It is 9x5x1.5cm and weights 120grams. It is silver and grey with a black band around part of the sides and around the TFT.

The face has the Carl Zeiss lens that can has 5x optical zoom and the ability to take still images up to 16.2MP.

The difference in lens extension is only .5cm between fully zoomed and no zoom, so switch on and it extends 2cm with another .5cm when you are up to 5x zoom.

The flash is tiny – but effective – it is 1.5x.3cm a real slit flash which is mounted above and to the side of the lens never closer than 3cm to the lens. In my tests in poor evening light the flash gave perfect daylight results. In fact on the TFT the results appeared a little over exposed on objects near to the flash but on later viewing within Windows and when printed out the results were good. It even managed the three metre test without problem.

Looking from the back the left side is clear while the right side has wrist strap anchor point and a door behind which there is a mini HDMI socket. The base has a slide door with a very small slider to release it, behind this the solid battery lives as does and MS or SD card you might lose. Further along the supplied mini USB to USB lead fits and this can be fitted to a supplied 13amp plug to charge the battery or without the plug to charge from the PC or notebook. The base also has a tripod screw to steady the unit when on a good zoom.

The top has stereo pin hole microphones mounted 1cm apart a bar on/off button and a hair trigger shutter release with the wide angle / telephoto control around it.

This leaves the back that is dominated by the 5.7x4.2cm TFT screen this with its surround fills the height of the unit and from the left to only 1cm from the right edge of the unit. The right edge of the TFT surround has a three position slider switch near the top and a rocker switch near the bottom the ubiquitous five position joystick although small does impinge into the TFT surround in the central area, above this a movie capture button and below this the review button. While I found the controls tight it is certainly a design feat to fit everything into such a small package. My opinion is that a lady’s slim fingers might suit this unit better than a larger man.

Pages 7 to 28 of the small Instruction manual should get even a novice started but for information you will need the PDF version on the supplied CD, I feel it is a mistake to call both Instruction Manuals the paper version is really only a Getting Started Guide.

Image quality was excellent both with and without flash and these days you need also to note the video quality and this was also fine. You can capture still images in 4:3 dimensions in 16MP, 10MP, 5MP and VGA, 16:9 images in 12MP and 2MP.

Movies can be captured in FX 1920x1080, FH 1920x1080 and HQ 1440x1080, the difference between the first two in the amount of compression.

The Scene mode has 14 options once you progress beyond the two choices of ‘Auto’ these are Easy and Intelligent. One feature I did not try is the cameras ability to capture images in 3D and then show them on a suitable 3D TV.

Doing my searches found the Sony DXC-WX7 at a best price of £163.70 and free delivery from the first link below, the price has a £30 cashback after you complete a online form the price quoted includes the discount.
